Fireworks and Frightened Cats

This evening a neighbour was setting off fireworks. Both cats were in their outdoor pen.

As the fireworks were exploding both cats came charging in, one went behind the settee the other managed to compose himself and kept popping out into the pen.

What should I do with the other, encouraging him did nothing. I don't want to force him out if he feels secure.

I've never had pets that have been frightened of fireworks, any ideas.

Sue

we've always kept our animals in the same room as us when the fireworks are going off. Just keep an eye on them x

Thank you, I've got to admit I leave the kitchen window open so they can come and go as they please (into their outdoor pen). I didn't realise the neighbours were going to have what seems to be a firework display. There has been the odd firework here and there but these were one after another and it was the loud noise that frightened the life out of them.

I will keep them in as the nights draw in, bless em.

It annoys me too, fireworks shouldn't be sold until the week before, but that isn't going to happen.

Re: Fireworks and Frightened Cats

I dont think you can have fireworks this time of year without a licence its worth checking I would also put a note through neighbours door to make them aware of the effect it had and ask for warning if the intend to repeat the process ALL my surrounding neighbours let me know if they are planning to let off fireworks

Re: Fireworks and Frightened Cats

Where we lived before we had horrible neighbours, one year they had a firework display right behind my cat pens, I was furious and told them so, all i got was a mouthful of abuse , they also thought it hylarious that they had scared all my cats half to death.
I personally hate fireworks and think they should be banned from sale to the general public. I can never understand that it is illeagal to carry a knife in public but OK to be in possession of a load of gunpowder. Have you seen the size of some of the modern fireworks, they are like mini bombs.mad:

Re: Fireworks and Frightened Cats

my cat, is an indoor cat, but is petrified of fireworks and especially thunder.
when she hears thunder she hides under the bed cover and shakes..poor thing

although she hates any type of visitor. if she hears a car door....
poof she is gone. she either hides under the bed covers, or under the bed.
but as soon as company leaves and the door shuts she comes out from hiding.

such a silly girl

I'll check on that, as its really worth knowing, personally I think a licence should be necessary.

You are right they know we have pets it would have been decent courtesy to let us know. I also think they should be banned or only for organised events.

Your little one isn't silly just unsure, like one of my boys Sooty. I was shocked as to their reaction but more so at Sooty's reaction.

They are both out at the moment in their pen, all is quiet - bliss.
