three kittens abandonded..

Ok so yesterday was walking back from the shops and seen a box in a bag that wasn't there when I went to the shops, I heard scratching and thought "no, couldn't be, could it?!" I opened the box and yes, three baby kittens in a tiny box, terrified. Some dirty bastard (excuse my language) had left them there.. Thrown away beautiful kittens as if they were garbage. I was ragin to say the least.

I've never had kittens before as my familys always been towards dogs.

I think they're JUST old enough to be away from their mother. I don't know their sex, and I don't know how to tell it? I'm sure like any other babies they would get fed around 5/6 times a day? When would be the best time to feed them?

Any help would be appreciated on this, my next door neighbour was going to buy a kitten for her daughters birthday and so I've gave one to her as I couldn't possibly look after three, I've gotten attached to the other two and even then I don't know anyone else around my area so I don't know how they'd be with animals where as I'm an animal lover and know they'll get treated like princes/princesses. The three kittens have settled in fine.

But again any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Joanne.

Re: three kittens abandonded..

You local vet should be able to help. The nurses / receptionist will also offer advice. They shouldn't charge for basic questions and they may well have a new customer in the future.

You can also contact your local Cats Protection or RSPCA office for help.

There are tons of resources online too, but having a human who has done it before is always a great thing.

PS My friend found two unweaned kittens discarded under a car a few weeks ago and spent weeks hand rearing them. They are now growing and happy and apparently today "found" the bed the humans sleep in. So it can be done, with effort.

Will they eat solid food? If not you will need some formula and a syringe.

Aww I have absolutely no idea how anyone could just dump them

Firstly to tell their sex pick them up under their tummy with their bum facing you and lift their tail up. We were always told that girl kittens bits are much closer to their bum than the boys bits. Sounds strange but have a look on the internet and their are plenty of websites showing diagrams and photographs to help sex the kitten.

They should be having lots of small little meals when their just babies, we got our kittens 4 weeks ago when they were 5 and a half weeks old because the lady that had them was going to get rid of them! What we've done is left dry food out all day long so they could eat whenever they like, and have now introduced wet food at breakfast and dinner time.

I would also give the vet a call to go and get them checked out, he'll have more of an idea of how old they are. There might be someone along soon to help with more experience than me that can maybe try and help you find out how old they are too.

Hope this helps

Re: three kittens abandonded..

Glad to hear that you have taken these little kittens in but I would strongly advise that, rather than keeping them yourself, that you hand them over to a cat resue shelter where they can be assessed re age/health ect.Im sure if you are serious about wanting one they will let you rehome one once they are old enough.Kittens ideally should stay with their mum and litter mates until they are 12/13 weeks old. This is when they learn their "manners" which us humans are just no good at teaching.

Re: three kittens abandonded..

Take them into vet this morning for a check up, get the kitten back off neighbour and take it too. Good advice from Buffie

Re: three kittens abandonded..

vet asap - check on age to be sure

has the other kitten actually gone or is it staying with it's siblings for a while longer (vital for emotional and behavioural well being unless the new owners already have a cat/are *very* experienced cat people)

worming and flea treatment determined by vet on weight, good quality food - depending on age may need softening/watering down

milk substitute may also be needed (available from vet or Pets at Home) depending on age

Re: three kittens abandonded..

Thanks guys! Really appreciated! I have an appointment with the vet on monday, think they must be around 5 maybe 6 weeks old, they look healthy and eating fine aswell as running my livingroom riot lol!

Adorable wee things.

I am quite serious as I was about to get a kitten reserved, of course I did my research before hand but as I'm not a cat expert I have no idea the age of these little ones.

Still can't believe someone could throw them away. Box was tiny aswell. Poor wee souls. Just glad it was me that found them and not some nasty children or idiots, being glasgow its full of them here!

Re: three kittens abandonded..

Welcome to the Pets Forum and well done you for taking on these little dudes.

Eveyone else has given you their feedback and there is nothing more I can add.

What I would say is that life and fate work in very myserious ways. I believe it was meant that you should find these kittens. Angels come to us in all shapes and sizes - I think 2 little angels just came into your life. (Although there will be days when they are anything but..... )

Good luck with these little ones and we look forward to seeing LOTS of pictures. We like our pictures around here.

Re: three kittens abandonded..

I find it really shocking when I hear about things like this, it is just so utterly cruel, especially when most likely it is their own fault for not getting their cat spayed in the first place.

In the very very unlikely situation I ever found one of my cats pregnant, I would be damn sure that I took good care of those kittens and made sure they were properly homed etc.

I would take as much advice from the vets as you can, but little meals and often is the call of the day really. Are they using the litter themselves? I would keep them together as long as possible for socialisation, but expect that when they grow up, they may bite a bit too hard, or not understand acceptable play. We had this problem with our kitten Rose, but luckily our older cat Dante soon saw to the end of that.

I had a similar situation actually, one of my friends found a box full of kittens a few weeks back and she wanted to keep them. I suggested phoning rescues first simply because she had never owned cats before, but apparently they are full to the brim and can't take any more at present. Swansea Cats Protection said much the same to me recently, apparently there have been more kittens than ever this year, it's just so sad.
