I Found A Lost Cat

Hey folks,

I registered here because I thought you guys would have some good advice for me.

There was this cat miowing it's head off in the street tonight, I think it must be lost. It had a collar with a bell on it but no ID tag.

It was about 9:30pm when i heard it. It was miowing like CONSTANTLY and loudly, shouting for it's mum and dad i guess.

So i petted it and stuff, it was really friendly, it followed me home and i took him in, gave it some milk, but he wouldn't settle down, started miowing again and wanted out. So i let him out and he's just been wandering around the area as if he's trying to get home but can't find his way :-(

Poor guy. I was hoping that he's just got lost recently and if i left him to wander around his owner might find him....but i don't know if i did the right thing, maybe i should have detained him and put up posters or something?

What should I do if i find him tomorrow? Did i do the right thing? I couldn't contact any of the relevent agencies because it was late evening on a sunday night so they were all closed. I'm worried about him!

Hiya and welcome to the forum

Keep an eye out for the cat and if you find kitty again doing the same maybe a call to local vets or knocking on a few doors, see if anyone's missing the cat x

Also don't give kitty cow's milk - a bit of chicken or normal cat food would be fine or if you want to give milk then try some whiskas cat milk

Hope you find the owner(s) xx

Re: I Found A Lost Cat

If it is still hanging around you could take it to a vet and ask them to see if it has been micro-chipped and/or put a few notices up in shop windows in the area.

Re: I Found A Lost Cat

Also, it it always worth phoning your local cats protection to see if they know of any lost cats, either in the area or matching the cats discription.

Re: I Found A Lost Cat

You must not assume this cat is lost, cats are very good at making out they are lost when they are not, it could well be a very local cat whose owners were simply out for the evening, or perhaps away for the weekend and had left a neighbour in charge of the cat. So see if it comes back and how it behaves. Only consider that it may be lost if it seems to want to move in with you (and don't try to encourage it to do so by providing gourmet food - something very basic will be eaten readily if it is really hungry)

On the other hand this cat could be many miles from home, if it has jumped in a workman's van, or been kidnapped and dumped by some vengeful gardener (yes there are people who openly boast on the internet about such actions). So if you keep seeing it and it really is hungry, the first thing you need to do is to take it to a vet to be scanned for a microchip. Explain the circumstances on the phone when you make the appointment, the vet should not charge you for scanning but it might be worth making sure first!

If there is no microchip then posters locally, an advertisement in the local newspaper (ours puts "found" ads in free of charge), ringing round the local vets, cats protection and RSPCA to see if one has been reported missing. I would not recommend handing the cat over to the RSPCA under any circumsntances, their record for destroying animals for no good reason is enough to make me avoid them like the plague, but they may have a report of a missing cat.

Finally if you have tried all those things there is a place on the internet where people list lost and found animals. I can;t remember where it is but a search should turn it up quickly.

Do let us know what happenes, won't you.

Liz

One such forum is this one: Purrs In Our Hearts - Cat Forum UK - Index

There is a 'lost and found' thread. Note is a UK forum only. I think it also has links to CPL and cat rescue pages/contacts

I would be worried too. Poor Kitty.

I think if I was you and I found him again I would certainly detain him. I would try to make him comfortable and settled a little bit and I would put posters up in newsagent windows and around busy areas etc etc.

It is such a shame when cats go missing

Good luck

Re: I Found A Lost Cat

Good job you are vigilant -Keep your eye on him / her. If you feel happy to do so make sure that you leave some food. If he is lost and doesn't know the way home, getting fed at yours may mean he at least stays in the area.

I would call Cats Protection (or your local vet), It maybe he is lost and he maybe chipped. I don't know what the procedure is and whether they come out as I haven't had much experience with CP. But if they did they could scan the poor little lamb and see if he is chipped and may be able to get in touch with the owners.

If he has a collar on, he is likely to have a home and may have wandered away or might be a randy little sod, shouting for a mate

Also people often advertise on Gumtree about lost cats so have a look on that. You could start an ad (it's free) Describing him and the area he is in. The only thing I would say about Gumtree is keep your details of contact private as there are some real nutters who use that site, as well as some really nice, valid people!

keep your eye out for him and let us know.
