Re: Building a cat run
Yup no problem, will share share pics a bit later.
I used pond netting for the roof, It was 11M by 2M so should have easily cover the roof but fell about 4ft short, knackered my hands stretching that, still that was my own fault, didn't know that I should have got it bigger, still like you say seemed like strong stuff! I used PVC mesh for sides, there local man selling it on a market, worked well also. |

Re: Building a cat run
warning for anyone else looking at this thread, pvc mesh is easily chewed by cats and escapable. we dont suggest it in a cat run.

Re: Building a cat run
Thanks goldleaf I would of preferred not to have heard that just after finishing building it, before was the time.
![]() I did ask person on this thread about chewing and she had no problems, also asked the father in law who a builder who's built dog enclosures with drainage etc and he thought it was fine. The mesh I have is PVC coated and he has not looked to chew it. I think he would do well to chew through it as it was a job to cut it with proper equipment! Having never built anything in my life shows with bit of effort anyone can build one. And now for the piccies... (P.S Still would like to hear if anyone build a tree or hammock ) |

Re: Building a cat run
sorry i cant read everythread everytime otherwise i would have pointed you in the direction of a deer netting. as for a cat tree, you can get a tree and cut it down and add platforms to that as a cheap outdoor option. if you want to make it part scratchpost too you can buy sisel from screwfix and wet it in water for an hour before stapling it to the tree, tapping it tight with a hammer every 4 rings. and then carry on stappling it. as it dries it will pull nice and tight
good luck dan

Stitchmo is gorgeous! Love the tabby pattern!
I'm planning to make a cat tree but the indoor type with some Ikea shelves. If you're interested, here's a bit of inspiration IKEA Hackers: Stolmen Scratch post IKEA Hackers: Cat Activity Center/Sleep Center IKEA Hackers: Bookcase with scratching post and hammock Good luck and let us know how is it going! I'm sure you'll be unstoppable now! |

Re: Building a cat run
Firstly thanks Dan, was considering the scratching pad on the tree, good description.
Stichmo yes thanks TatiLie, yea his a good looking boy Like them tree's gives me some ideas. And finally thanks for the tip on the ground, I'll have to keep an eye on it, I smashed the ground with sledge hammer round edge so hopefully compact enough not to do that too much, I'll have to water it if it does |

Re: Building a cat run
I know this post is a few weeks old but I just had to add my bit...
I also built a cat run with a tunnel leading from a cat flap I cut into our conservatory. I used galvanised 5cm square wire mesh which I then painted matt black with some paint suitable for metal. This makes the bright, shiny wire less noticable and, I guess, adds further protection against corrosion etc. It was dead easy to paint - using a small paint roller - no mess, no waste of paint either. The wire came in a 1m roll but I found it easy to join sections of it together using loads of small cable ties, which also got painted black. The tunnel was alongside an existing wooden fence so I just built a small "lean-to" frame against the fence, used the same wire on the top but on the front I used "checkerboard" fence panels. I would have used the same checkerboard on the top as well but it's more expensive. The main run is joined on to a garden shed and for that I used a tubular aluminum fruit tree cage frame and covered it with the wire mesh. It was brilliant at first, while our girls were kittens but now they are bigger, they need more space so we are just about to go the whole hog and cover the whole of one side of the garden with a much bigger cat run, built with a wooden frame similar to the one in this thread. There are loads of pics on my blog and I am going to document the building of the new, big run there too. I don't know if I am allowed to include a link, but here goes - How to Make an Outdoor Cat Run ~ Its A Grand Blog I hope this gives other people ideas... Mike (Pixie Kitten and Tigerlily's dad) |
