House cats - for and against

I would very much appreciate your opinions on this, since I am very tempted to keep my cats inside. However, my sensible head warns me that it is unkind, to prevent the natural behaviour of our feline friends.

My worry is that in my working life, I have many clients who have lost their cats to road kills. Although we live on the edge of a village and not near a main road, a client had her much loved cat Benny, ran over just before Christmas and was distraught. They had re homed him from a rescue centre only a few months previously.

So the questions is do you have a house cat?
or an outdoor cat?

Re: House cats - for and against

All three of mine are indoor cats, and don't seem to suffer as a result.

Our first one is scared of outside, so even when all windows and doors are open she doesn't venture outside. We've had Bentley from a kitten, and he also doesn't seem keen on the outside. Marley is in the middle of her first vacinations and can't go out.

A major consideration is where you live, I live on a very quiet road, 1 tractor an hour in rush hour. Also my cat came as a kitten from a farm, she was already used to going out. Indoor cats can live a happy life, as long as Nici says they are given stimulation.

Re: House cats - for and against

All 3 of mine can go out if they wish - 1 was from a farm and had the tendency to go out in the back field - my oldest cat goes in next doors garden and back ( and thats only b'cos she gives them all best ham!!!! ) and the youngest only goes as far as next doors garden too for the same reason as my eldest....none of them seem to go anywhere apart from that really ....
