Unhappy Tom cat Hissing and Spitting at me after the birth of our female cats kittens

Hi all,

I have a lovely 9 Month year old Tom cat, he has always been a bit scatty but a lovely cat any way my 16 month year old female has just had kittens and she is an adorable mum.

The problem is the our Tom has been acting very strange since their arrival when ever he hears them crying or squeaking he shoots out of the room, he also has been very nasty he will come up to you for a stroke and then turn and hiss and strike out with a lot of spitting he is a solid cat so can do damage!

I am worried as I dont want him harming mum but I dont want to lock him out as I want him to get used to the new arrivals

Can anyone offer any help please, I dont know what to do for the best.

Is he a 'full' Tom cat? If so, at 9 months he is coming to the point where you need to look at having him done - sooner rather than later if you can. Un-neutered toms can become very aggressive - almost overnight. The arrival of the kittens will not have helped the situation. I agree with Dally Banjo in that you must ensure he doesn't get anywhere near the kittens who, in his mind, are on his territory.

Dally Banjo is right ... Please keep him well away from your queen and her kittens!

He should be no where near them, as he can kill them or at the very least cause great stress to your queen, which could result in her not looking after the kittens properly.

He should be kept as far away from the queen and kittens as possible. Even him calling is not good. He needs neutering asap (as in this week) if he's not been done already. Please also consider homing him somewhere else until the kittens have gone to their new homes at 12-13 weeks if he should continue to call out and be stressed. It really would be best for all, especially if he has become extra aggressive as you describe.

You have an accident waiting to happen with an entire male cat.If he gets near your mum and kittens I would think there will be one hell of a fight and the kittens could be killed. He should really have been neutered months ago.Is he the father of the kittens. You do realise that your female will be able to mate again in the next few weeks which will be very bad for her health. Please get him off to the vets to be neutered ASAP and your female spayed as soon as you can.

Is he 9 months or 9 years old

Is he the father of the kittens?

If he isn't neutered he needs doing right now, your queen could already be pregnant again if you haven't been watching constantly!

If he is neutered keep him away from mother and kittens.

I have a male neuter who hissed at my newborns, he did settle down after about a week but i didn't allow any contact at all,it simply isn't worth the risk! If you need to go out make sure he is firmly closed away from them.

Remember to have the mother spayed once the kittens have gone (approx 2 weeks after).

Thumbs up Re: Tom cat Hissing and Spitting at me after the birth of our female cats kittens

Hi Guys,

Thank you so so so much for your replies a big relief I dread to hink what might have happened, I have booked both of them for Thursday to get the chop and he has been kept away from mum and Kittens I felt I didn't want him to be left out, but after your replies he has been kept away.

After he gets the chop my neighbour who is having one of the kittens has kindly offered to home him until the kittens are old enough and Mum has built up her strength.

Thank you for your replies most appreciated.

It's best to wait until the kittens have gone before having mum spayed.

I'd wait around 2 weeks after to let her milk supply dry up,and give her time to settle.

Yes to the male though, you're making the right decision there

The Kittens are 2 days old and mum is doing a super job! I am taking them all to the Vets to get checked out but only the Tom (Bryn) is getting spayed.
