Changing to and choosing hooded litter tray

Hi,

Any recommendations for hooded litter trays and also how best to transition Dee over to one from her current large rimmed litter tray? Want to avoid spraying/spillage issues particularly with Sam due to join us in 6 weeks!!

Re: Changing to and choosing hooded litter tray

I use the corner litter boxes from zooplus
Great Deals on Litter Boxes & Cat Supplies at zooplus: Corner Cat Toilet House with Filter

if your cat has never used one(a covered litter tray) i would suggest leaving the old one down still and placing the new one next to it with out the top on for a couple of days and then place the lid on but take the door off. I personally find putting a couple scoops of used litter in the new box for smell to encourage the use of it. once the cat has begun using it with the lid on for a week or two place the flap on and place your kitty in the box with the flap on. let them come out and feel the flap and see if the tray has been used in the day. then remove the old litter tray after the new litter tray has been used with the door on.

you can also do this by pouring the old litter into the new box and taking the old box away completely and leaving the litter box top off for a week. then placing the lid on with out the door for a week and so on.

Re: Changing to and choosing hooded litter tray

Mine have always used both types absolutely fine. They have always come in using the rimmed ones as kittens, and then I just place a hooded one (without the door on) next to the other litter tray so they can get used to it. Some of mine would rather use an open litter tray purely because if they use it overnight and it gets a bit smelly, the smell stays in there.

I would suggest getting an extra large one so that there is plenty of room in there and trying it without the plastic flap first of all so that they have easy access.

Good luck!

Louise

Re: Changing to and choosing hooded litter tray

i have both open and lided ones, iv never had any probs with any of the cats using both, although i prefer they do some of their business in the filtered lided one but im sure you wouldnt have any probs, the flap mite put them off a bit as 1st, but they will get used to it

Wouldn't bother with corner tray one Amy - they don't really do them big enough for MC's bottoms to get into lol xx

You've seen the jumbo ones i have and fully grown MC's get in and out no problem x They do a medium sized one too if you need x

got mine from zooplus xx

Yes Amy has an MC off me and another little bundle of fluff joining their lovely family too xx
Personally i would ask size of cat before saying corner tray would be suitable though, as most cats wouldn't fit in them due to the shape it can be hard to comfortably go x Waste of money i found x

Re: Changing to and choosing hooded litter tray

Sorry I should have said they are MCs. Had assumed I would need to check sizings with my beautiful babies...Dee is quite dainty but Sam is going to be a big beast Can't wait for the two of them to be playing together hehe. Have seen a couple of jumbo ones it was just incase there was a particular make that was good or feature to look out for.
