What's a self clean litter tray?

oooh I've seen them advertised! Think any clmping litter would work. I find Worlds Best clumps really well

how do they clean themselves , do they kill germs

I have 3 of these litters.
I use the clay ones so that the wee clumps. That way when it cleans you get the wee and the poo rather than leaving the wee still in there all damp where the litter has not soaked it up.
You just have to bang the bottom of the litter when you have turned it upsdie down and it will fall into the tray section

i think i'll stick with a good old poop scoop, looks a bit complicated to me and not very hygenic.

Not at all complicated. Its hard to think how it works though until you actually see it

I agree, looking at the images on that site of how it works and how you "clean" it out, looks a bit unhygienic to me.

I would prefer to just scoop each poop out after it's been done.

What about an unpleasant runny one, wouldn't it just spread itself around
