Completely new to cats, and feeling a bit lost

I have never owned a cat before in my life, though i have family who have had cats for as long as i can remember.

I am seriously looking into getting a Sphynx kitten, no earlier than next year, but i want to make completely sure i know what i'm doing before i even think of making any plans.

One of my main worries at the moment is breeders.. in my life i have only ever got one dog off a breeder, all the others were rescues, and i am absolutly terrified of ending up with a sick kitten or giving money to breeders with questionable practices.
From looking online i'v found one breeder i'd say i would completely trust to get a kitten from, but of course, they get an aweful lot of interest and i'm worried that, if i didn't manage to reserve one of their kittens, i'd be left with no where to turn.

I'd be so greatful for any and all advice and suggestions, regarding breeders and general cat/kitten care. I can never get enough info, i'm a constant worrier.

Thank you. (hope that all came across right!)

i think there more sensitive to the cold, and need you need to be carefull with the sun too.
Think they need a wipe with a shammy leather to absorb there oils

Re: Completely new to cats, and feeling a bit lost

It's a minefield out there regarding breeders and you have to do a lot of homework. Probably the best way to find a good breeder is by recommendation from people who already have cats from them.

I dont know much about the Sphynx cat breeders but there is a member on here that has Sphynx cats. He might be able to recommend someone.

Re: Completely new to cats, and feeling a bit lost

Iv been reading up on them for months now, as well as watching a bunch of videos about bathing them and such.

Been looking into tons of indoor cat activities too, like those giant hamster wheels for cats and i'm considering getting some carpeted shelves up.

Of course, that doesn't mean i'm any where near finished researching.
Like i said, i'm not planning on getting a kitten untill at least around this time next year.

I do want to get in touch with some breeders, but i'v read a few stories of people constacting breeders and it all ending in tears, which is why i'd really like some direction before i start talking to just any old breeder.
I'm also unsure about shows, never been of interest to me and i'v only really read anything into them recently because apparently its the breeders that win big at the shows who are the most trust worthy.

Re: Completely new to cats, and feeling a bit lost

Hi Welcome

I love Sphynx cats. I met my first one in the "fur" at a show, what a beautiful breed of cat, full of purrsonality and character. The few breeders I met were very nice too, very open and very approachable. They even let my friend and I have a cuddle. I think when you take the plunge and contact a few all your worries will be put to rest. A show is probably the best way to make contact. You can view the cats and approach anyone owner/breeder who appears friendly. Speaking to an owner or two is a good way of getting a recommendation for a breeder as they will have been in the same position as you. The Fife and TICA shows I have been to have had several sphynx entered.

If you do a bit of searching on the net you may find a sphynx chat board somewhere too.

I have to say that just because a breeder does not have a big win at a show does not make them any less trustworthy. It simply means that they do not have the best cat on the day
