New Kitten - Urine and Faeces Retention

We picked up our new kitten, a four-month old tabby, yesterday and she has been eating well for the last 24 hours. We note that so far she has failed to produce any urine or faeces. (We have provided a nice new litter tray complete with litter....) Clearly, the experience of the new environment is stressful for the kitten and it's this which has most likely caused the retention. For how long is the situation likely to continue before we should start to get worried and consider taking action to encourage the resumption of normal movements.... Thanks.

Re: New Kitten - Urine and Faeces Retention

Hi

New cats can be quite sensitive to change and will often not use the tray for a while. Whereabouts is the litter tray situated? If its not done so already, I'd move the tray to a more 'private' area so this may make her feel more secure. Do you know what kind of litter was being used where she came from? Big adaptions to litter texture can also be an issue.

It was over 24 hours before we saw anything from our kitten, and then it was on the dining room floor! Sure he hasn't been somewhere without you noticing?!!

The tray is by the external kitchen door which is probably the most private place which the geography of the room permits. The tray type and litter used are of the same brand as she has been using at the cats home.

I have a very sensitive nose, PussyCatNan, and she hasn't been given free reign of the house yet....

Thanks, PussyCatNan. It's now 17 hours and counting. And she's consumed at least four sachets of kitten food.... And I've no wish to see my kitchen wall pebble-dashed....

Now that would make a splendid interior colour theme

Actually Peter, Audrey has a point. Very tasty and will help the motions along nicely. Kitten will probably be ok soon. If no motions after 36 hrs, ask a vet but I think she will have used the litter tray by then.
