Shorthair, Bengal or Savannah?

Hi all. I'm new to this forum so hello

Now I'm a home owner, I'm wanting a cat. Had them when I was living at my parents and now wanting one for myself.
I've been researching a lot and now thought I'd ask other peoples opinions that know more than me.
Want I want is a cat that is really playful and curious and also looks different to your average moggy. I'm not really into the idea of letting it out to roam the streets either as I 'd be worried if anything happened to it although I'd let in into the garden if I was there. Me and my girlfriend also work mon-fri so it would need to ok with stopping in on it's own in the day.
I was originally looking into a blue British Shorthair but has since read in some places that they might be a bit quite and not as playful as I first thought.
What are other peoples experience of this breed?

I've short listed 3 breeds: British Shorthair, Savannah and Bengal. The last 2 I haven't read anything negative about althought Savannahs seem to be quite expensive.

What are peoples thoughts! Please help! and sory for the long post

Re: Shorthair, Bengal or Savannah?

my friend was a breeder and had bengals she said they are really naughty lol she has 3 queens left two siamese and a serangetie (sorry about spelling) all pets now and a moggie kitten i think all cats grow out of playing to a point and its more luck of the draw. all very nice breeds i have a moggie that looks like a turkish van 13weeks someone gave him away at 9weeks old and he is ace plays like mad and also cuddles up when i'm sat down even comes to bed for a grandma snooze if we get chance lol (not a granma just feel like one)
Good luck in your quest

Re: Shorthair, Bengal or Savannah?

Hello and welcome

Out of the three my choice would be a BSH whatever colour.

Kittens are very active and playful as they grow out of kitten stage cats tend to sleep a lot and become less interested in play but you have to consider the fact that you are both out all day Monday to Friday. An active cat especially a Savannah I would think could become bored and destructive unless stimulated.

I know very little about Bengals or Savannahs but I am drawn to them, possibly because of their wild appearance and recent wild ancestry, I got to hand it to them they are lookers too.

Sue

Re: Shorthair, Bengal or Savannah?

I had a blue BSH and she was beautiful, but only friendly to me. She'd swat at anyone else, but let me get away with all kinds of things

In all honesty if you're both going to be out during working hours, I'd suggest you get a pair, no matter what you choose. Nothing entertains a cat like another cat.

Also, Sue's got it spot on there: Active kitties will get bored without stimulation, and very little stimulates a cat like exploring the outside world. If you want an indoor cat, I doubly reccommend that you get a pair so that they can do half your work for you.

Alas you tend not to know whether your cat's an outdoor-lover or an indoor-lover until you get it home and let it settle in. By the time Bootsie was eight weeks old there was absolutely no way we could keep her in - she was at the patio doors and windows scratching to get out even as a wee tiddler. Earthquake, though, far prefers the indoors, and shows very little interest in the garden.

Re: Shorthair, Bengal or Savannah?

hiya, ive got 2 bengals and 2 british, they are worlds apart.

The bengals are highly intelligant ,mischevious, noisy, into everything, greedy, playfull, one minute there snuggling on my lap the next there tearing round the house knocking anything over thats in their way. I absolutly love them though, there so full of fun.

My british on the other hand are pretty quiet, sleep alot, like to play as kittens but it seems to lesson as they get older, not as intelligent as the bengals but they purr for england and love lots of cuddles.

It really depends what you want from a cat, bengals do better in pairs, and need alot of attention.
The british are usually quite happy as an only cat, not as high maintenence.

hope this helps with your choice whichever you choose, there both great!

I have Savannah and Bengal cats. The Bengal cats are more playful and boisterous the Savannah's are more laid back and love hugs and attention.
