Unhappy Kitten weaning problem

Hi Everyone

Wondering if anyone has any pearls of wisdom for me on this topic!

My 3 boy kittens are now 5 and a half weeks old, 2 of them have been eating really well for over a week and are getting lovely and chunky. However, the kitten that was the fattest to begin with is not interested in the food I'm offering and is starting to look a little thin next to the other two, although he's not lost any weight.

I have offered kitten food mashed in to a pate, I've just offered kitten milk, and I've offered kitten milk mixed with the pate. I've tried rubbing a little gently on his mussle and he backs away. Everytime I feed the other tow I make sure that he is offered some but it's getting to the stage where I know he won't even look at it. I've noticed Mum is starting to feed them less now too so I'm worried he'll just waste away

If anyone has any helpful tips I'd be really grateful. I've read all the standard advice on the internet and nothing seems to work, he just sits there are watches the other two eat or backs away

Re: Kitten weaning problem

Hi Becky, try him with his own little dish away from the others just til he gains some confidence and more of an appetite,i'll assume he still feeds from mum so he's being a little lazy as it's easier for him to go to mum, maybe try a little sardine,or egg yolk only with a little evap milk and a touch of honey mixed together and see how he goes, put it on a flat dish and smear it on his mouth and paws, don't let him near mum or siblings and he'll have no choice but to clean himselfOr a little baby porridge sometimes works as he'll be able to suck/lap it which after a while you'll be able to move him onto something else, just be patient and persistant like when you think he's hungry enough he'll cry a lot so then move in with the egg yolk mix, good luck and let us know how you get onForgot to say Becky but also gently dunk his face in the egg mix/baby rice and again he'll have to at least lick

Thanks Kelly that's great, I will give that a go and try the baby porridge too! I'm just hoping that he'll be hungry enough soon to try it!

Re: Kitten weaning problem

Dont worry he wont waste away he's just a little slower than the rest at appreciating the finer things in life.

Try offering him some on the end of your finger, he should lick it off. Then if he likes what he's tasted gradually move your finger to the dish and into the food.
With a bit of luck he will follow and start to eat on his own. This usually works for me.

Re: Kitten weaning problem

I've never known a kitten turn their nose up at it, there are also other recipes on there you could try, they're on the breeder page.

Ahh thanks so much - will try these tonight and let you know if I have any sucess over the next few days

I've tried the whole end of the finger and gently letting him know whats there, but again he doesn't show any interest, so I'll try the receipes and hope for the best!

Re: Kitten weaning problem

If the recipes dont work then get him to the vet for a check up. There may be an underlying cause for him refusing to eat. Good luck!

Re: Kitten weaning problem

Hi all

Well I did the scambled eggs last night and we have a sucess (thanks Audrey!), he had some (not a lot) but its a start, and he had a bit more this morning before I left! I'm really pleased so thanks for your advice.

I'm going to try and maybe mix a bit of the kitten food in later to try and give him a taste for it, but if not I'll keep going with this for now
