To Collar or not to Collar?

My Lennox seems to get through more Collars than he does biscuits. I always buy the saftey release ones, i feel more relaxed knowing he has a collar on for many reasons. It claims he is diabetic so not to feed - as people often feed him which discouraged him from returning home! It also gives people a quick route to informing me of anything i need to know - and it also shows people he is owned. He is chipped but i feel a collar is needed.

After the last collar has recently gone im starting to wonder what people think? Is it worth it - at around £10 a time for the tag engraving and collar?

Also why does no one ever find these collars and call the number on them??

So please take part in my poll!

Re: To Collar or not to Collar?

I've voted yes, like you i have considered not putting one on because they are microchipped but I think they are needed for all the reasons you have outlined above.

£10 a time!?! Are you nuts? I get my tags (for the dogs & cats) off eBay, £1.80 + 45p P&P for two.

pet tag, Home Garden, Business, Office Industrial, Sporting Goods items at low prices on eBay.co.uk

Re: To Collar or not to Collar?

I have collars on 3 of mine even though the persians are chipped. Patsy is forever loosing hers but just buy her cheap ones now as it was costing me a fortune. The kitten had 1 on but she pulled her fur out scratching at it so taken it off for now will put it back on when she is a bit older.

I would say only if they go out, and then those reflective ones for the traffic. I would never collar my lot, it would ruin the coat and they would end up with a bald ring round their necks

Re: To Collar or not to Collar?

I had a cat strangled by her collar to the point where she passed out. This WAS a safety collar that is supposed to release. Had I not been there to remove the collar (could not do this till she past out as I couldn't get hold of her) then I am sure she would have met a tragic end.

I know of other stories of simular things happening. A cats protection lady told me of a cat that was found hanged by her collar. Awful story!

Re: To Collar or not to Collar?

yes i understand hwere you are coming from with my kitten leelou when we first put a collar on her it was a little loose and she try to pull it off with her mouth but she got the collare stuck in her mouth and when it to a fit - in order to grab her and release the collar from her jaw i was severley attacked by her as she was fitting! Very scary - but has never ahppened since - i thought it should have released with the force she was putting on it?

Indoor/outdoor. We have a very big garden so they are allowed outside as they dont leave garden . Persians are mainly indoor but enjoy going out to sunbathe and play with kids. My kids love to be outside and dont know how to close a door so would be virtually impossible to keep them in unless i kept them locked in 1 room which they would hate as they are my little babies and dont like to be away from me

Ahhh. Its ok when we went shopping last night Mark asked if we should collar Dee. I said I didn't think so as she wasn't already collar and she is indoor although I want to get her microchipped 'just incase'.
