Yes i think you areWe don't collar and have never collared any of our cats, they are indoor cats only but yrs ago when our moggies free roamed we never collared, imo the dangers are high enough for free roaming cats without adding to them, which is what i think collaring a cat does, microchipping is fine but to be honest a lot of vets don't check for microchip as a matter of course and if their is a dead cat/kitt found by the council or the like well they don't go out of their way to honor the soul, think you have to way up the risks for any free roaming cat/kitt and and make your decision as to whats in your cats/kitts best interest and explore as horrible as it is what you can live with in the event of....Or not and hope for the bestThe thing is i know by putting info on a tagged collar we are trying to do the right thing but in honesty most folk if they were being stalked by someones cat/kitt wouldn't bother to look and honor the info, some would but in general i think not,not everyone thinks like we do and don't care enough

Re: To Collar or not to Collar?

Oscar has a collar eventhough he is microchipped. With so many cats in the area and Oscar liking to explore i think its safe. I use the safety buckle ones and they work, Oscar escapes from them if stuck and yes i have found then all over the place in the bushes. I think its one reason why my other cat went missing as he used to have collars on all the time and as soon as he didnt i think someone took him in.

I voted yes as i have had no trouble with them yet. I also add a 49p ID Tube from wilko to the collar, this says he is chipped so if found people will know.

Re: To Collar or not to Collar?

Its funny. I was just reading this thread yesterday and it started a panic attack about our 2 little ones. They both have worn collars with name tags since they started going out. We tried to introduce them slowly at first and under supervision so they wouldn't get stuck trying to get them off. Since they are not chipped my girlfriend urged me to make them waer them a bit against my will due to the dangers of them getting caught.

Yesterday, when getting them in for dinner, Hugo came in without his collar on. he must have got caught somewhere or got in a fight so hopefully proving that the safety buckle on them works. They are made by Ancol. When testing them I thought a cat wouldnt be able to break the safety buckle and was worried. Maybe I have just been proved wrong!

So, at the end of all that, I think I will stick to using these collars with the safety buckle and keep my fingers crossed!

What do others think of the safety buckles??

Re: To Collar or not to Collar?

My first cat wore a collar, back in the heady days of collars without safety catches. The big technological leap forward was a bit of elastic that allowed the collar to stretch.

Even though she was a shorthair, years of collars left her with a ruff that made her look daft whenever she wasn't wearing one (mid-change escapes, etc). She never seemed to mind it, but I wasn't keen on her having one.

When it became apparent that my current cat was vastly interested in the outside world, I decided against putting a collar on her. She's very lithe, and a great climber, so the thought of her catching the collar on a tree and ending up hanging from it terrified me. But she also has a healthy fear of cars, and will get herself away from the road the moment one comes along, so I'm reassured that she doesn't need a reflective one.

With my new kitten, I also won't be collaring her. I think a healthy coat and clear eyes is a good enough sign that a cat has an owner, and frankly if most boy-racers see a reflective collar in the road they'll speed up to try and hit the cat rather than slow down. I'm hoping she'll learn from Bootsie to fear the road.

Bootsie is microchipped. Earthquake is too small to be chipped right now, and as such isn't allowed outside.
