Does your council read chips of dead cats?

OK - this thread might be a bit upsetting.

I read on a couple of the Rescue Cat Forums that councils may not even have a chip reader for reading chips of cats found dead at the side of the road.

Councils will pick up the bodies and dispose of them; some will take off any collar and contact the owner. However although they do the latter they may not routinely scan for chips.

Apparently there is no standard routine for dealing with road kill pets.

I will try to find the original post and put in a link.

Those of you who let their cats out might find it worthwhile ringing up their local council and finding out what they do. I think I will with ours, on Monday.

I doubt my local scan any dead animals they find.

I will look into it though.

What I find rediculous is that most councils have scanners for stray dogs but won't use them to scan dead cats.

Ours scan for chips on dead cats. A friend lost her cat and that was how she found out what happened to her.

Re: Does your council read chips of dead cats?

It might be an idea to list councils that do scan (as long as you are happy with that)

Wish this forum had the CPL advice on what to do if missing a cat stickied - maybe the councils that scan could go underneath?

Lets hope when micro-chipping becomes a legal requirement things will change.
