Bonding with new kitten

Picked up new kitten last night, spent a lot of the night in his litter tray and in bedroom being very vocal.

This morning was able to play for a bit but he will not willingly let me touch him.

Me and my partner have both picked him up and sat with him, he would struggle for a bit before relaxing but be quick to get away if grip relaxed. Once he is away from us it is straight back into litter tray again!

Not sure if he has eaten or drunk anything yet but he is very aware of where food and water is.

Any other tips on bonding or do we just keep picking him up, when he is awake, and fussing over him?

Re: Bonding with new kitten

I wouldn't insist on picking him up all the time if he doesn't like it.

Best to let him get used to his new surroundings and let him instigate any cuddles etc.

Playing with a cat is a great way to build trust and bond with a cat. A piece of string or a feather toy will really delight him !

Good luck !

Re: Bonding with new kitten

Agree with the above - i've had my two new kitties for a week now and the boy, Auster, has just started coming to sit with me and climbing on my knee for a cuddle

His sister is more shy, but she loves the 'Da Bird' and will play with me with it for hours.

Patience is the key and definetly keep playing with them as well as talking to them

I would say, just talk to him lots so as he gets used to your voice, play with him on the floor so as your on his level, and just give him attention without appearing too forward, and you'll find he will gradually become more loving!

I first had Alfie and then got Evie a week later, and Evie used to be very skittish. So I just played lots with her and alfie, and eventually she saw how Alfie would come over for kisses, and now she does too!

Re: Bonding with new kitten

What a change!

Played lots yesterday, has been following me around and slept at the end of the bed (on floor-his choice) not in his litter tray

Silly question but i take it they only purr when happy/content, he purrs all the time, when eating when washing, playing, having cuddles etc. Also he is VERY vocal he 'chats' away to you if not in room with you and only stops when he can see me or partner!

Got some great photos and even a short vid of him playing yesterday can't wait to show you

I have two kittens one of my is very vocal purring at anything and he will sit on my lap they are 4.5 months now and Sweep will still climb up to my shoulder to get as close as he can. The other one Sooty he isn't very vocal but he isn't keen on cuddles either, I started by giving him attention for only a few seconds at a time gradually building up even now he will only let me pamper him for a few seconds not quite a minute. Sweep on the other hand is like a magnet.

It sounds like he's doing well, fabulous.

Aww, bless. I have 2 kittens, 4 weeks apart in age.

Kevin (12 weeks), is the noisiest thing I have ever known. He miaows like there is no tomorrow when I go to the cupboard where their food is then he purrs and growls at the same time when eating, miaows loudly to inform us of his intentions to use the litter tray then jumps in purring, jumps out announcing he has done his business. He miaows loudly informing us of his presence when walking into the room (different sounding miaow to the litter tray and "I want food" one!) Purrs like an outboard motor when snuggling up for a snooze and goes "AAH" (short sharp shout) in my ear or as close as he can get to my ear when he wants attention (either for a cuddle, attention or if it is nearing food time).

Moonshine (16 weeks), on the other hand is the silent one. He purrs quietly and contentedly when he settles on my lap (or shoulder ) and miaows just once when I go to their food cupboard nearing food time (often cannot be heard though over the roar of Kevin's vocals - my mum, kids and partner have never heard him miaow!). He often looks at Kevin like he has 2 heads

We had Kevin a few days before Moonshine joined us (they are from 2 very different litters). It seemed like Moonshine was very aware that Kevin got a lot of attention because he is so vocal but he is still a quiet little thing and has not tried to out do him on the miaow factor. He has the most captivating eyes though and if he catches my eye and I talk to him, he comes over like a shot for some loving, so I guess each kitten has their own way of telling you what they want.

They both follow me around everywhere, but its only Kevin I hear protesting outside the bathroom door when I am in the bath - when I get out, both my boys are sat there side by side, Kevin shouting at me for my audacity of leaving him for 20 minutes, Moonshine looking up at me purring looking pleased to see me again.

But when they both snuggle up on my lap for cuddles (after a bit of a tussle for the best spot ) their contented purrs in unison is just music to my ears

xxx
