Yes I can see how that might happen in the mind of a kitten - little beans must feel a bit like litter under their paws!

Maybe wait with the beanbag idea until the cat is older and will properly appreciate it

Re: Possibly getting a cat...how to prepare our home?

I think forum members have covered about everything.

Training a cat, isn't really something I've done until now with my two kittens and I was surprised that they seem to understand. Chasing my dogs tail I point and say no firmly but not shouting, and I move them away. They now respond to no and stop what ever they are doing.

Keeping cats off worktops, sorry can't help because I encourage mine to jump up on the worktops as they need to be able to access their outdoor play pen via the kitchen window.

I think I would use the same method of using the word no and put him/her on the floor. It may take time, it may not make a difference. Cats do pretty much what they want to.

I use an anti-bacterial cleaner but I have to be extremely careful and make sure the surface is completely dry before the kittens can jump up. I usually only wipe the surfaces down before I prepare food and the kittens are not allow in the kitchen at that point.
