Advice on my poorly kitten

Hi, last monday my dog decided to attack my 5 month old kitten completely out of the blue. They had been getting on like a house on fire up until then, but for some reason she just went for her. It all happened so fast and my kitten ran behind the telly unit. When I pulled it out to check him, he was just led there lifeless. He is still at the vets and they said he has no broken bones (which is good) but had paralysis in his hind legs and left front leg. They have since told me that his hind legs are now working and although weak they think that it was temporary paralysis, but his front leg has not made so much progress. They are keeping him in until the end of the week to see if there's any improvement, but what if there's not? What then? Am I going to be faced with the decision to amputate? Or will I have to make adjustments to have him home as he is? Has anyone got any ideas/ advice please? A very distraught cat lover x

Re: Advice on my poorly kitten

Im so sorry to hear about this hun
You need to talk to your vet about options really and you need to decide what quality of life the kitten will have also who would rehome a 3 legged cat? because surely you wouldn't keep her anymore?
saying that i think because she is still a kitten and if she was to be 3 legged there may be a good chance of her becoming a inside cat but without a shadow of a doubt if she becomes better, she needs to be rehomed and you will never be able to own a cat while you have your dog unfortunatly.

I think you are right about the dog. I think I will speak to my ex-partner about the possibility of him having her as originally it was his anyway. I cannot imagine my life without cats aound me, especially my kitten
Anyway I'm going in this afternoon to visit him and hopefully get some further info from the vet.

If the dog is not yours then technically you shouldn't have to pay for the vet bill but then that could open a can of worms Im exactly the same my cats were here first and the dogs came into the house second so if anything did happen the dogs would have to be rehomed.
I hope things go ok at the vets
How long have you had the dog for? and why did it attack your kitten? x

Re: Advice on my poorly kitten

i am so sorry to hear that
My wish is that my cats and dogs would go on but i would never trust the dogs 100% with my cats.....because of something like happened to u.
They can go on for years but then one little thing and it can go wrong so easily.
I hope ur kitten will get better and hopefully it will still have a kinda good quality of life

Re: Advice on my poorly kitten

Sorry to hear about you porrkitten, personally I think the first thing that needs adressing is is will you ever trust the dog with the kitten again? personally - I wouldn't and short of muzzling the dog I don't see an easy solution with this.

with regards to the amputation, you need to be steered by your vet on this one, BUT, my step daughter has a cat with a back leg missing (amputed as a kitten die to a RTA) I think they say that it is easier for them to adjust without a bad limb easier then the do should they have to have a front one amptated. BUT again, my panter had two cats which both lost a front leg and although I never met them he assures me they both led good lifes, one of them even continued to climb trees and fences.

Whatever you decide it has to be in the best interests long term of the little kitty, and judging by your email there is littlle doubt that you will not do that.
Good luck on the outcome.
please keep us informed,
regards
Sue

Re: Advice on my poorly kitten

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your kind msgs, they have made me feel a little more positive. I have now been to the vets to visit Minky and although I cried alot (again!) it was so lovely to see him. He is well in himself, eating loads, using his litter tray and purring everytime he sees someone! The nurses said they love him and he is a real time waster! Apparently they even have a list of names that want to adopt him if I chose not to have him home (fat chance, I said!). So it's nice to know he is being well cared for. However he is still really weak. Although he can now stand up, his back legs are not strong and he keeps standing on his bent back paw on his front. They have said that it is possible it will get better, and there's no way they would amputate. I have to ring tomorrow to see if he has to stay in over the weekend. So good news in a way, but the prospect of caring for him when he returns home is quite daunting. He is such a little star though, and my kids adore him, I'm sure we'll all try to make him happy.
As for the dog, I am talking to the ex about it tonight. I will never trust it again, and although she has been the best dog with my kids ( i have had her from 2yrs until 10yrs and my kids are 7 and 5), it does make you wonder whether as she gets older there may be things that will make her snap - will it be my children next?
Anyway, as I said thanks to everyone fro replying, it's good to know that people care!

Sorry to hear about your kitty, hope she makes a good recovery.

I'm not defending your dog by any means but would it be worthwhile for you or your ex partner to get the dog a check up at the vet. Perhaps she's feeling unwell or uncomfortable in some way which may have caused her to lash out, as she is 10 years old now.
