Expressing Cat Milk for newborn Kitten!!

Hi, we have 4 newborn kittens approx. 16 hours old and one is not feeding, much smaller than the other three and is feeling cold. We called the vet and were put through to the evening emergency line and they told us to express milk from the mother and feed it to the kitten. We were told to squeeze nipple and express milk into a dish - sounds easy but has anybody done this? Mum's not playing game and I'm wondering if the vet thought we said cow not cat! Any help most welcome as I don't think the kitten will last the night.
Thanks, Mark.

I agree that this kitten will not make the night without food.

Don't go away, someone on this forum will be able to help you.

At the moment I am thinking condensed milk... anyone else?

Same here, carnation milk and boiled cooled water! Can not substitute mum's milk tho so best to keep trying to put kit onto mum. You can get substitute milks like Cimicat or Lactol but they will not have the same effect as the colostrum that they get from mum's milk. Especially important in the first three days

Re: Expressing Cat Milk for newborn Kitten!!

This is my mix it works a treat
1 tin 400g Evaporated Milk

200g of boiled or bottled water

Mix together in a bowl

lightly beat 1 or 2 egg yolks

Add egg yolk to bowl and mix in

2 tablespoons of honey in a bowl, mix in a small amount of boiling water until the honey becomes a liquid

pour honey into mixture

mix all together.

Pour the mixture into a thermos flask and keep it in the fridge and then just pour out the amount you need for each feed. This way you don't have to keep making up new mixture for every feed.

Nice one May!
This thread seems to be in two areas though.

Maybe all move to the thread in health and nutrition section.

Thanks evereyone for your help, kitten has taken the evaporated milk and appears warmer. Sorry for the two threads, I wasn't sure where would be best to start so opted for both. I'm now going to switch to the Health thread.
