Broken leg

Hi, I have just bought my cat back from the vet, he was hit by a car and has a broken pelvis and the top of his leg is broken, it is displaced by about 1 cm ( he is only 16weeks old)the vet has said to leave things as they are and allow him to heal by himself, he is now in his cat box and will have to stay there for one month, surly he needs an operation to pin his leg back in place. has anyone else had the same situation? and what was the outcome for the cat, did they heal ok? please help, im worried for him.

Thanks
Helen & Alf

Re: Broken leg

Have had a cat with broken pelvis, they realigned something inside. What is critical is whether or not there is any nerve damage, if there is he might not be able to pee and then that is the end I'm afraid. I had a cat go that way once. Also had a dog where they found out after setting one leg that the other had total radial paralysis and would have to be amputated, decision again was made to PTS.

The second cat that had the broken pelvis (no other injuries and not done under a car, thought to be thug with large stick who was bragging aboput hitting one of my cats) made a total recovery within three weeks. Now, I must tell you that in those three weeks she was under total restriction of movement. I literally shut her in a large carrier, big enough for a litter tray and a blanket, water hung from the door in one of those D dishes, food in on a saucer, that was it. I just closed the door and left her. She didn't get let out of that carrier at all for the first week. They were concerned because she hadn't pooed which could have meant more blockage inside, I can tell you I have never been so pleased to see a pile of poo as I was when she finally did some! The second week she got allowed out to walk over to food bowls placed a few feet away, then got picked up and put back in her carrier. The third week I let her walk over to use the litter tray in the corner as well - but until right at the end of the third week she went no further than about six feet from her carrier and that only a couple of times a day under very close supervision. At the end of the third week I let her go and sleep in the armchair in the next room, just a couple of days before they signed her off. It was not a nice way for her to spend three weeks but I wonder if her full and rapid recovery was partly due to that.

I do hope your cat is alright.

Liz

Re: Broken leg

Hi, sorry that your cat is injured - My cat was also the victim of an RTA he suffered a broken ankle and hip - goodness only knows how he managed to get back to us over a six foot fence but he did! Because his injuries weren't new (he'd been missing 6 days) the vet couldn't do anything for his ankle and left it to heal itself. He had the ball joint on his hip removed completly by the vet and had to be rested for three weeks. We kept him in a dog cage with litter tray etc etc but the poor little devil was so un-happy we resorted to letting him lie on his cushion when we were there to watch him and caging him at other times. He was brilliant and healed really quickly - now he just has a bit of a "mince" when he walks. He doesn't go out of the garden anymore bless him and is much more affectionate. For ages he never purred, we used to call him Mr No Personality! Now he the sweetest cat ever. Hope your puss is OK, try not to worry I'm sure the Vet's advice is good. Let us know how he goes..

Re: Broken leg

Many Thanks to you both for replying,
Im glad to hear that you both had happy endings with your pets. people can be so cruel to animals cant they Liz, that boy will get his cumupance later im sure!!!
luckily my little man can go to the toilet with no problem and with out pain too.it just dosent look right to see the bone protruding up so much, i live in the Cannaries so the vets here are a little different, they say cats dont need joints as us humans do and the muscle and ligaments will grow around the bone and act as a "false" joint.have you heard of this before? im going to try some different vets tommorrow and get a 2nd opinion. many thanks again for your stories, its nice to hear from others what happened to their cats.

Regards
Helen & Alf

Re: Broken leg

Sorry to hear this. I had a friend with a kitten that an adult cat jumped on playing too roughly and broke its leg or may have been similar to your kitty's problem, the kit had to have the leg amputated. That is worse case scenario for you but hopefully it will not come to anything like that. If it does its amazing how they adapt to it and the cat as an adult is still right as rain. On the other hand your kit may not need this and all being well the leg will heal just fine on its own. Good luck for you both. Cx.

Re: Broken leg

Yes they can indeed develop a false joint.

Re: Broken leg

Hey, another broken pelvis story for you, my 5 year old cat broke her pelvis in several places. The vet ordered her to be confined to a cage for 6 weeks. Those 6 weeks finished on friday and she has been back for a check up.
The pelvis healed but the cat still has a bit of a limp, which we assume she will have for life now.

The only thing is, boy has she enjoyed being lazy! She has put on alot of weight just sitting around, though the vet said not to worry, she will loose the weight again when she gets active.

Hope you little kitty is okay, I think lots of love and strokes helps!
