Smile Need Help with injecting young kitten with antibiotics vitamins.

Hey Guys!

I would really appreciate some advice on how to inject a young (she should be about one and a half month old, bit more maybe) kitten with antibiotics and multivitamins. I got two syringes that the vet gave me and he said I d do it on the top bit of the back leg, not in the skin, but in the muscle. I did it yesterday and almost messed it up because I hit higher up in the bum. I asked him if I could do it in the back of the neck and he said I d better do it where he said, but I find it very hard. Maybe if someone could link to some instructions online...

I've never had to inject my own cats either and would feel a bit iffy about doing it. I would if needed provided I had had some proper training. I am thinking like if you have a child with diabetes and you have to give insulin injections that sort of thing, is it something along those lines, where you have to do it on a regular basis

insulin pens are failsafe i think, traditional syringes run the risk of air bubbles in in-experienced hands.

If you're finding it that difficult then I suggest you go back to your vet and tell him this... and take it from there maybe.

Re: Need Help with injecting young kitten with antibiotics vitamins.

hey guys thanks for the great replies, I just gave her one shot on the upper leg, I am going for the second. I ll take care for the bubles too, I am scared of course but the doc which I talked to seemed very calm about it and said pretty much shoot anywhere around that part of the leg on a muscle.

And yeah it's part of treatment, I will be infecting her for the next 3 days, 5 total. I suppose because she was very very ill he didn't suggest anything orally but chose injections, plus she had diarrea and problems with her stomach.

She hasn't eaten in couple of days I ve been giving here rice water and today I started out on some rice water with bolied fish (without the fish) she won't eat solid yet.

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES!

Re: Need Help with injecting young kitten with antibiotics vitamins.

I've had to inject a cat and a rabbit at various times over the years. With mine it was because they wouldn't take the meds any other way - even when the vet tried and it wasn't practical to take them into the vet twice a day.

With both of them I injected at the scruff of the neck and I practiced with a syringe full of water in front of the vet. I found it much easier than trying to get tablets down these particular animals. Most of mine are fine - but not this particular bunny or cat!!!

I had to take the empty syringes back to the vet and they were counted before being disposed of.

Initially, I worried about doing it as I am one of these people who hates needles but I just told myself if one of my animals developed diabetes I may have to do it so it was as well I got over my phobia asap. I soon got the hang of it and neither animal struggled at all.

I am not sure how I would have felt about injecting in another area though - the neck had so much loose skin it was quite easy. Both animals got better so I must have done something right.

Lumps

I could do it, but so long as I had been shown properly.
