Could it just have been because she was expecting you and it was to stop them running out the house or something?
How old were these kittens? And where were the adult cats?
The ones in the bathroom were about 7/8weeks.
Ones in the kitchen were 5 and half months.
Ones in the lounge were about 6weeks.
One in other room was adult silver.
One outside was stud.
2 more advertised for sale (didnt see them)
1 litter just born so didnt see them.
Another litter due any day now.

The adult cats apart from the pregnant ones and the silver in the the other room were roaming free.

Dont know if there are anymore.

I understand why people use the pens makes sense....but using pens in 'every' single room when they are separated by the rooms anyway.

Maybe just too many cats and if not in pens cant keep eye on them all?

No I didnt ask her....was quite surreal as wasn't expecting it to be honest and was abit took aback.

Re: Question for all breeders..........

Cages were big enough for litter tray, small scratch post and food trays.

The little kittens looked like they had space...but the 5 and half month ones wasnt really room to do anything except sleep, eat and use tray.

Re: Question for all breeders..........

That seems a hell of a lot of pens to me too. I only have two, a huge one on wheels and a little one. Sounds like this breeder has a heck of a lot of litters

I don’t think it helps with the kittens’ socialisation or confidence in a new home if they are not used to running amok around the entire house.
That said, that breeder may have just penned them temporarily so she could show you and your friend each litter individually, although with only 8 kittens involved it wouldn’t have been too much to let them all out together – who knows, there could be a myriad of reasons. Did you ask her why they were penned?

I dont think it was a temp thing as they were all in different rooms. Was too well thought and laid out to be honest. And when the 5 and half months ones come out of the cage they weren't social. I mentioned that they didnt seem socialised and apparently when they were born she didnt have space so her friend took them til she had room. She said on their return they hadnt been socialised but she has done the best she can since.

One thing that made me doubt that was that these 2 were in a cage in the kitchen. And when she let them out she wasnt happy they were jumping up on the side and said she didnt like cats jumping on the work top. Which leads me to believe that they arent let out much because of this. I could be wrong though.

Re: Question for all breeders..........

By what you have said it sounds like this breeder has far more kittens in the house than she can handle and she is using cages to house them 24 hours a day. I dont agree with this at all and would give a breeder like this a wide berth.

Her options should be due to lack of space, either not have more than one litter at a time and/or provide them with a separate kitten playroom where they can run and play freely.

Re: Question for all breeders..........

Hmmmm that doesn't sound good I did wonder whether it was because the kittens ran away from visitors. I don't know why people have so many litters at a time if they can not cope or don't have the room. If they have studs outside or have to visit someone elses stud its a situation they can avoid very easily.

I think my first instinct was right to be honest....there's a difference in penning kittens for saftey or valid reasons such as sep food etc...

Was the kittens in the bathroom penned in that alarmed me 1st...and then the ones in the kitchen alarmed me.

But I wasnt sure whether this was 'normal' ...I suspected it wasnt but just needed to hear from other breeders and see what they say and weigh it up in my mind. Guess I know now ......one of her comments was that it isnt about the money (no one mentioned money) but I think the reality of this situation is that it IS about the money or these kittens would be being raised as what I deem ''a more normal situation''. Sometimes I can be abit naive with things I dont understand properly.

Re: Question for all breeders..........

OMG - too too many litters and too many cages for my liking.

Separating kittens feeding from adults feeding, safety at night were two good reasons given.

When looking for kittens, I would advise selecting from a house where there are no more than two litters growing up at the same time. Just my humble opinion. There will be justified exceptions of course. This particular example "smells" a bit of "kitten farm" to me but I am prepared to be corrected if better information comes to light....
