First cat question: Should I get two?

I have never had a cat before,as my family was always a dog household ( which i love also)

I'm planning on adopting a kitten from my local rescue in a couple of months. I have no experience of ever raising a kitten,so I've been doing my research for nearly the last year.Baisically, I'm now wondering if I should get two. I do work, although not quite 9 to 5, so I'm thinking that maybe two could keep each other company. I know from experience that having two puppies can be a nightmare for the first few months.

But I'm also concerned that if I get two together, they won't bond with me as well. For an inexperienced cat owner, that is my worst mightmare.

Any thoughts and experience would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance.

Re: First cat question: Should I get two?

Hello.
I have had both. A single kitty many years ago to having 2 and now 3!!
When we lost our first cat at the age of 18 years i decided then to have 2 together.
It is the best thing ever. Having 2 kittys is so much fun just watching them playing and getting into mischief. We never watched TV for months.
They are 16 ears old now and have always remained good mates. They sleep together and wash each other.
When we go out we never feel bad like you do if you had just one and you left it on it's own.
So i would say 2 is great.
You now might ask which to go for females or males.
I don't think there are any set rules here.
If you decide to go for 2 you could ask at the rescue centre. They might put 2 together for a few days to get them to know each other.

You must be so excited.
Good luck and let us know what you decide!!

Re: First cat question: Should I get two?

Its a tricky one as i know your worried that 2 cats may bond together and not with you. But i would say put the cats needs first as you may be out alot and therefore feel guilty....so get 2 if you way it up and it seems feesable.

Re: First cat question: Should I get two?

I would say two.

We recently got our first cats. OH and I both work full time but shifts are different, so they're not left all day every. OH was keen to get one, but I managed to pursuade him to go for two so they could keep eachother company.

BEST thing I ever did!

I feel much better at work knowing they have company, as they never have to be alone. They spend a lot of time playing together - which is not only good while we're out, but sometimes nice when we are in and trying to get things done! We've had so many laughs wathcing them toghether, and seeing two very distinct personalities develop.

We certainly have no problem with them being too attached to eachother and not us - both are serious snuggle monsters. Not just lap cats - literally climbing up you to sit on your chest or face and rolling around purring like a motorbike. They always greet us when we get in, first thing in the morning etc.

I love having two, really can't imagine just one now.

That shouldn't be a problem!! When I got kittens at first I got two as well, and we also had a dog! But that worked out great, kittens are much easier to raise than puppies, the only thing they need to learn is how to use the litterbox Other than that they just do their thing

Re: First cat question: Should I get two?

I would never get two puppies together because you need a lot of your pup's attention to teach and train all the tons of things dogs need to know to function in human society... cats need a lot less training though, and I prefer to have two cats, especially when they're young. They can burn off energy together, keep eachother company, and the one young adult cat I had on his own (houseguest) was rather on the needy side...

So for me, one pup, but two kittens :-)

Re: First cat question: Should I get two?

I have been wondering whether to get another cat at some point to keep my kitten company while I am out at work. Maybe when she is a little older

Re: First cat question: Should I get two?

It should also be pointed out that a lot of rescue centers will only re-home young kittens in pairs, especially to working households as cats are very sociable as kittens and can get very lonely and bored.

I would always recomend two, it's so much fun to watch them play!

Re: First cat question: Should I get two?

I think I will get two kitties.I realise that it would be a lot better for them, and I do have to work.

I will be rescuing them and my local centre has already had a pregnant cat brought in. I'm registered, and going up on Monday to pick a date for my home visit. It will be a few months yet though.

Thanks to everyone for all your help and opinions...You helped a lot xx

Re: First cat question: Should I get two?

I'd agree with everything the others have said.

I've only ever had one cat, after he passed away we got Devon, I wish i'd got two together but at the time OH wasn't keen. Now 6 months later he decided another one was a good idea! so last week we got Charlie.

Best thing I ever did! they are hilarious to watch together, keep each other occupied for hours and now I don't have to worry about Devon being lonely.

Devon is not in anyway a lapcat, Charlie looks like he might be but I wonder if he'll bond too much with Devon and not be so bothered about us but to be honest whatever happens they are still great company for me and each other so I don't really worry about it anymore.

Def get two.
