Talking Re: What you need in your cat birthing box

Got to share this with you guys - I think its fantastic! Its a complete kittening / birthing kit for everything you need. The only thing it doesnt have is replacement milk - but they sell the RC milk for £7.99 also.

Kittening kit comprising quality items to prepare for the birth of a litter of k Breed and Nurture

I ordered one myself and was so pleased and have reccommended it to my mother in law who breeds dogs. They also do whelping kits for dogs

That's a new one on me, I've heard of Raspberry leaf for human pregnancy but not a feline one, still I guess if it gets the uterus ready in human pregnancy it would do the same in a cat one!! Mel x

Re: Birthing box -whats in yours

Same as selk
Kitchen roll for mopping up excess yucky bits and placentas
Rubbish bag for throwing out debris
Digital Scales for weighing babies
Soft padding for laying babies on the scales so it is not too cold and hard for their tiny little bodies
Pen/pad etc in case you want to note the times of arrival, sexes, weights
& Everything else.

Re: What you need in your cat birthing box

So Far I have………….

Sterile hand lotion
Iodine Spray
Replacement milk & Baby hand rearing kit (just incase, I like to be prepared!)
Bed sheet all cut up to size
Towels
Box of Tissues / Kitchen Roll
Hot water bottle & heat pad for mum & babies
Rubbish Bags
Scales
Paper & Pens / Pencil all headed with sex/weight/colour etc
Kitten id tags with own numbers (incase litters are due near each other so need to tell them apart)
Puppy pads good to put down I was told
Scissors

There also seems to be some good herbal / homeopathic remedies for birthing, I wasn’t sure whether to buy any?

Re: What you need in your cat birthing box

my cat gave birth last may (she pregnant again, also due in may). it was the first time for both of us. i was their from the first contraction to an hour and a half after the last kit was born and it was a wonderful experience. i didn't have much, but what i did have was :

lots of T towels
paper tissue
antibac hand gel
lots of coffee

tbh, i didn't even think about any of the other stuff you guys have, like spare box, always thought that the mother will be happier if she has her new kittens with her, rather than having them put into a seperate box whilst she delivering, although i did confine the new borns to one corner whilst the mother was cleaning the newest kitten! the mother just seemed to get on with it, without any help from me, and i thought that was the best for her, but i was their, ready to help in any way i coould, had she needed me.

this time, i think i shall be a bit more prepaired lol, with the sissors etc.

this has been very helpful thread, and i want to thank all involved!

Wink Re: What you need in your cat birthing box

Hi Im new to this blog but had a healthy litter of 4 kittens on the 31st march 09! My norweigen forest x maine coon cat cat gave birth to 4 georgious babies fatherthered by a ginger "moggie". she has been brilliant never went near the birthing box till her waters went! was really worried. Since she has delievered her 2 boys and 2 girls 10 days ago she has let me and my husband hold the babies from day 1!!!! our 3 children hold them from day 3(aged 11-16) and our Rottweiller bitch lick them from day 4!!! not to mention our other 2 cats aged 6 and 14 reguarly passing by! I think there is a lot of scare mongery amonst cat breeders and loving homes! b4 i did this i had 6 homes so all 4 kittys were accounted 4 b4 they were born(with 2 dissappointed new mummys) cats know what their doing and who to trust!!!
