Kittens weights

Hi there,

I bought 2 kittens last week against my better judgement at only 6 weeks old. They were going to be sold to a pet shop if they were not sold by then and I was reluctant to let that happen!!

They are both healthy, eating well, playing and using the litter tray as they should.

However, I weighed them both yesterday and was surprised about the difference in the weight between the two. The girl is 1.06Kg whilst the boy is nearly a Kg heavier at 2.02Kg. He was 7 weeks old on Monday 29th and she was 7 weeks old on Tuesday 30th. They are from different litters.

I know that boys grow faster, but the difference is quite large. The size of the 2 queens did not seem very different either that would suggest that either of them would be very large or small.

I am thinking that he is just going to be a very large cat from what I've read and that she is of normal size, but I thought I'd ask some experienced breeders about this to put my mind at ease that she is not growing slowly.

Re: Kittens weights

Hello cassiegd i have a litter of kittens that were 7 weeks old on monday aswell and they weigh 1.2kg 16oz 1.0kg and 1.1kg i was a bit worried about there weights so asked on here and was told they are abit on the ''light'' side but as long as they are well filled and not boney then they should be fine, mum of my kittens is a very small siamese which may have something to do with it thought, would love to see some pics aswell and welcome to the forum

Re: Kittens weights

It will differ from breed to breed. Those weights seem huge to me, my kittens tend to be 1.5 - 2kg at around 12 weeks and as far as I know that's not considered small or lightweight at all.

Re: Kittens weights

The 2kg sounds big to me aswell but if they are from 2 different litters and I am assuming they are moggies with unknown dads? the size is bound to differ, the tomcats that I have around me vary from being the samish size as our cat Fifi who is 3kg (at 12months) to more than twice her size! They sound like healthy weights to me so I wouldnt be worried...sounds like you are just going to have a very big boy!

Re: Kittens weights

I have some pictures on my camera, but I have lost the lead that I need to use to transfer them to the computer. Sorry!

Hearing of the weights of others kittens has put me at ease. I'm not going to worry now! They are off for their first vet check on Monday so I'm sure they can let me know if there are any problems.

They are both just standard moggies with the father unknown so I've no idea as to their sizes. I would say that she is slightly skinnier than he is, but she's definitely not skinny, rather he is slightly on the podgy side I expect that he'll grow up to be a big lad. He's got a lovely chunky face which is why I chose him out of his litter mates!

They also eat different things which is a bit annoying. I'm feeding them both on Royal Canin Babycat, but he only eats the dry whereas she will only eat the wet. I'm sure that the nutrition in the wet food is just as good as the dry though as it is a good brand of food.
