Runt of the litter?

Is there always a kitten that's obviously smaller than the others in a litter?

Dexter has filled out a bit more than Ambrose and although Ambrose has a healthy appetite he is still quite small.

Re: Runt of the litter?

When Misty had 5, there was a visible difference in the first few weeks but they all pretty much caught up with each other in the end.

Re: Runt of the litter?

Try not to worry I think like all things living, each one is different. You could find your little one overtakes the bigger one, and by the time they are older, they are the same size.

Re: Runt of the litter?

I've had three moggie litters - over a 20 year period and with three different females, I'm not a BYB - and none of them had a 'runt'. They varied in size slightly and with the last litter the only boy was always much bigger than his four sisters and one of the girls is still quite a petite furball, but none of them were 'runts' as such.

Re: Runt of the litter?

.... We've not had "runts" as such ... More the opposit! We always have one or two in every litter that are WAY bigger than his or her litter mates. These little guys are bigger at birth and are usually the first to the milk bar too lol. I wonder whether positioning in the womb has anything to do with it or maybe they are just geneticaly programmed to be big whatever?

Re: Runt of the litter?

A friend had a litter of 10 pups. The original runt died shortly after birth and we now have the second smallest of the litter. Could there be any problems at all with her in later life or even as a puppy?
Her dad is an English Mastiff mix and her mother is a Boxer cross. My friend is not even sure of the dogs specific breed.
