Possible new breeder?

Hi everyone.

I'm interested in becoming a pedigree breeder, not anytime soon, maybe in at least 5 years but I'm just starting to do research. Does anyone have any good websites I could look at regarding pedigrees and the process I'd need to go through, registering etc.

I was wanting to breed my bengal x just for a hobby but when I started coming on these forums I realised it wasn't the right thing to do.

Also, I wanted to ask, how many of you make a living breeding cats? I am by no means wanting to breed for money, I just figured that with a standard job I wouldn't be home much through the day and I wondered how I'd get on with no job, I guess my occupation could be 'Crazy Cat Lady'.

Thanks for any help

Re: Possible new breeder?

There may be those that make a living but very few - I'm nearly 3 years in and have yet to break even let alone make a profit and can't see breaking even for a few more years yet. Maybe if you had 12 breeding queens and a couple of studs you might make more money but I think very, very few of us are in it to make money. I worked out I still need another 11 kittens from Minnii just to cover costs (and that's if nothing goes wrong!) etc.

Havew a look at the stickies at the top of the page and the GCCF wevbsite that might help with questions. What breed are you looking at? - I feel the Bengal market is probably flooded at the moment _IMO.

Re: Possible new breeder?

Yeah, that's what I guessed

I was wanting to breed Bengals because I do love them the most but I read that it was one of the more popular breeds been bred. There is only one breeder in my province though I do really like Birmans too so I that is definately an option. I was going to get a Birman before I chose my Bengal X but then I almost got scammed and ended up finding a Bengal X straight after!

I will check those out, thanks!

Re: Possible new breeder?

Certainly Birmans are gorgoeus - and if you need a helping hand with them I can help you. Check out my website. They are a good 'cheaper' breed to begin with - £450 ish for a breeding queen and £125 for stud fees. I cetainly know Bengals seem to be extortinate compared to those figures. PM me if you want more advice.
