Re: Urgent kitten advice please.
IS she stimulating the little one to wee and poo? Has she tried Nutri-drops (sp?), to get quick energy into the little one. Is she feeding her every 2 hours through the night? Is the little one warm enough? How small was she? My first two were tiny (74g and 85g) but soon grew into monsters, so small can survive. Has she checked for a cleft palate? Has she sought vet advice?
FIngers crossed for her. For Maggie ttake food to her. And Minnii didn't do a poo for 5 days after her first litter - try sardines in tomato sauce that seems to get things moving.

Re: Urgent kitten advice please.
Thank you Spid for your advice.
She has taken Maggie to the vets and they need to operate as she has a blocked bowel poor thing. They think also an infection and the hope is that the bowel will spring back into place after the op. She has to call the vet at 4pm to see how shes doing and if she can come home..untill then she is hand feeding the kittens. The worry i have is will she feel up to tending for her kittens after an op or is there a chance she may now reject them? |

Re: Urgent kitten advice please.
I always go by how vigorous the kitten is rather than their size. Small size doesn't always mean weak. The smallest kitten one of my queens had was 53g and he did every thing his siblings did, never needed topping up, he put on weight with the same % increases as everyone else.
In a largish litter the little one does sometimes get pushed out and may need a little extra help. Is your SIL weighing them everyday to make sure they are putting on weight ? Doing that can be a comfort as well as a worry. Did Maggie eat any afterbirths, that usually helps get the bowels going. My Alice didn't have a wee for 3 days after her last litter of kittens. I had made an appt at the vets, and just as I was going to put her in the carrier she did a HUGE wee. Ignore the above, got interrupted typing to do some work. I am sorry to hear about poor Maggie, I have heard of that happening after birth before. I hope things right themselves without the need for surgery.

Re: Urgent kitten advice please.
Thanks Saikou.
I just got a call from SIL and Maggie is back home and they didnt need surgery but used gas and a tube to clear her out. She has some laxitive to take for a while and has been told not to let kittens feed from her untill tonight, but they all have been hand fed and loved it,but are crying to be near mum who is in the box but sleeping. Im sure that it wont hurt to let them near her to save distress and as they are full they probably just want to be warm near mum. As for the kitten,it is feeding well from a syringe..and clearly has a fatter tummy than it did ,but i will let her know it is best to weigh daily to be sure. As four of them are so alike she did accidently feed the wrong one last night and the greedy little thing loved it lol, dont worry the little one got fed as soon as she realised. Im so pleased that all has turned out well and have included a picture from yesterday. |

Re: Urgent kitten advice please.
Ah what a gorgeous litter, they all look lovely and bright pink and content. I love the one cream one, is that the smallest one ?
I am glad poor Maggie didn't have to undergo an operation in the end, thats a relief for all concerned. Some thing good and smelly like sardines or freshly cooked mackerel may pique her appetite, and oily fish is good for keeping them regular. I hope they all go from strength to strength. If the little one is feeding well from a syringe thats very positive, he obviously has lots of fight.

But with lots of warm towels and gentle rubbing it turned out to be the strongest. it is very cute.(the colour is the same as my cat cocoa who is their auntie). The last few days have been all about problems what with cocoa having mastitis as well. It has opened my eyes to all the problems involved in breeding which i think many people dont realise. |
