Cat Birth Advice Please.

My brothers persian is expecting kittens this weekend(pedigree) and he has asked if i could be present as i have been there for my cat(cocoas) two litters.

My cats birthing went well and were no problems but i wanted any advice from experienced breeders should anything go wrong.

Firstly i have heard that persian kittens can have trouble breathing due to flat faces(dont know if this is true).
Also what is the best way to sever the cord should mum decided not to.

She is quite big so expecting maybe 5 where as my cat had three both times.

I am feeling nervous but want to be confident should she need any help.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: Cat Birth Advice Please.

I once heard Persians sometimes have trouble because the kittens have large heads, though I have no idea how true it is.

Re: Cat Birth Advice Please. Kittens Born.

Thanks for the reply.

She gave birth yesterday to 6 kittens but unfortunatly the first was stillborn.

She had no interest in any of the kittens and we had to clean them up, keep them warm and stimulate breathing.

She did break the sac and eat each placenta but thats it.

We were so worried as if we put a kitten beside her she would move right away from it.

But once she had finished birthing we put all close to her and finally her instinct kicked in and she let them feed while she had a much needed rest.

She had 4 blue kittens and one cream.

Re: Cat Birth Advice Please.

COngratulations! SOme cats are only interested once they have finished birthing - just keep an eye on them and make sure they are gaining weight.
