Re: Do I or don't I?
If she is a moggie then the only way for her to have a litter would be to let her out when she is calling to mate with the local tom. She may have travel to find him, having the potential to get lost, run over - common sense will go out the window as she will be driven by her hormones.
Mating with a cat, possibly a feral, you don't know, could open her up to all sorts of diseases, some of which have no cure. Even if she comes through all that, you will have to factor the cost of things going wrong with her pregnancy. She may require a caesar or turn out to not be a natural Mum meaning you have to take over feeding her kittens 2hrly day and night until weaned at 3-4 weeks old. Those are just some of the highlights. She is far better spayed.

Re: Do I or don't I?
As someone involved in rescue, I can only tell you that unless you have this cat specifically for breeding purposes, for a housepet spaying is always the best option. Several of those reasons have already been pointed out.
A frequent misconception is that it is better to let them have a litter first. According to the SPCA, medical evidence shows that females spayed before their first heat are typically healthier. |

Re: Do I or don't I?
Hi,
I would spay her rather than have a litter. Kittens are very hard work as it is and finding homes for them may seem easy but you just don't know whos getting them or what the kittens futures may be? I took in a stray who was heavily pregnant and she had 9 kittens and they tore my house to bits, they wouldnt stay in the crate they used to climb up to the top and climb out, in the end it was duct taped up so they couldnt escape. They used to pee in my coal bucket, **** on the carpet, chase each other up the wallpaper and curtain, torment the dogs, pull stuff off things and scratch my leather sofas! When people think kittens they see 'ah a cute fluffy kitten no trouble at all' but its ok when there 1 or even 2 but if your cat has a litter like I did its alot of hassle and trouble. You also need to think about infections, vet fee's, c-section if needed and also for feline aids and other dieseases she can catch. I am not going to tell you NO you must not do it, because at the end of the day the cat is yours but in the economical climate there are many kittens been born and slung out because people cant cope and kittens and cats in rescues because there owners cant afford to care for them anymore. Its also the run up to xmas so you may find by the time she has them its time for someones darling kids to take on home, myther it and pester it and then not want it anymore and want a dog instead! Re-Think and let us know! xx

Re: Do I or don't I?
its difficult to decide i have a moggy i breed from but the daddy is another of my cats and i have a waiting list for homes as in my area there not as many kittens around look into how many kittens available where you are and if your cat doesnt go out would she cope with going out, it is a hard choice to make alot think spay straight away but i have got alot of pleasure from the kittens we have had x

Re: Do I or don't I?
Personally, I don't see why breed more moggy kittens when so many are shut in cages in rescue centres desperate for a home. Why deny some of those a home just because your brother put an idea in your head? PLEASE spay her. Not only would you be adding to the numbers of kittens and cats needing homes, but there's also the risk of complications for her, and not being able to find them homes.
I LOVE moggies, but I think a lot more of them should be spayed. I am happy to only adopt moggies, but I don't see why they should be put to sleep every day when more are being bred! Where are you located? Why not check our your nearest rescue centre's website, look at those kittens and cats that have been abandonned, then decide if you wish to breed. |
