Re: Odd situation...
This is just a guess, but I would say its more likely to be hormonal as she was spayed whilst pregnant. It takes up to 6 weeks for males hormones to subside after neutering, its probably the same for females. If the condition continues it could be a remnant of ovarian tissue was left behind, that from what I understand that is very rare.

Re: Odd situation...
IIRC when they spay a cat they don't remove the ovaries, they remove the whole uterus. In the words of Monty Python - where's the fetus going to gestate, she gonna keep it in a box?

Re: Odd situation...
LOL, love the quote! Well, like I said, veterinary medicine here in Chile is a bit different. There are no vet assistants, YOU are the assistant. lol
With every cat I have had sterilized here in Chile (4 so far), the vet always shows me the parts that were removed. (Thankfully I'm not weak stomached LOL). She definitely only removed the ovaries and left the uterus in, that's why I wondered if there were a possibility of a pregnancy still. I will speak with her today and see what she says. If it is possible, then this will be a miracle pregnancy and any kitten(s) born is/are meant to be! I just need to know because if there is any possibility, then I need to be taking special care of mommy to be and be getting prepared for any new arrivals. |

Re: Odd situation...
You probably need to take her back to the vets and see what they say. It could be a phantom pregnancy though. If she is pregnant still then there are some really iuseful 'stickies' at the top of this forum about birth etc. Have a look through those.

Re: Odd situation...
Removed only the ovaries? What a bizarre idea! Surely that's just asking for a pyometra?
Anyway, if the uterus really was untouched then I don't see why she shouldn't be pregnant. I do find it rather unlikely though - are you absolutely sure she only removed the ovaries? Liz |

Re: Odd situation...
Spaying should include removal of the uterus and ovaries!

Re: Odd situation...
Hi all, thank you for all your replies and comments.
I stopped by the vet to chat with her and show her the pic on my cell phone that I took of Miss Kohlie's (cat in question) belly. She told me that yes, it is possible that there could be a pregnancy because she only removed the ovaries. (That is just how they do it here in Chile.) So today I will bring her in for an examination to see what is going on. The vet was concerned because it could be other problems too so today will determine what is up. I told you that veterinary medicine here is a little "different". I find myself asking LOTS of questions and then going to my friend Google and places like this to confirm the answers all the time. So far, she has not misled me so I guess it's just that I'm having trouble with the culturally different approach here. Anyway, I just want to be sure my little girl is ok and find out if I am going to be a Grandkittymom. |

Re: Odd situation...
Is there any way you could convince her to spay the cat properly? Removing just the ovaries could lead as Liz said to Pyo as well as increase the chance of it not working properly (ovary tissue left behind by mistake is now uncommon even if full spaying). I know you keep saying 'that's how they do it in Chile' but that doesn't make it a good idea!
