Snap Test

Ok what happens? LOL

So example my girl starts to call, I let the stud owner know etc... Then, if you call the vets can they get you in for this test on the day you phone up? just wonder what your experiences with your vets are like?

Thanks

Re: Snap Test

You phone the vet and if you have a good vet, they say "yes of course, come in at [ time of appointment ]".

You go in with your fur-child and the nurse or vet can do either a cheek scrape or a small sample of blood. My vet takes a small blood sample and the good thing is, they did not even shave my queen.

Half an hour later (and around £42 lighter from the purse) you get a piece of paper confirming that your cat is negative for FELV and Enteritis. This is valid for 24 hours so you can take your queen straight round to the stud or you can go a bit later but so long as you are within the 24 hrs, your breeder will be happy with that result.

If your vet is not up to scratch (as one vet asked me once "is this a pregnancy test?") then ask the breeder if you can contact their vet for this test.

Re: Snap Test

I would make sure they don't shave your girl, some of them do and its unnecessary. I always insist they take the sample from the leg too, they don't need much blood.

If you haven't had a test done with your vet before I would check before hand to ensure that they have the equipment to do it there and then for you some of them expect to send it off and give you the answer in 2-3 days which is no good.

Mine used to use the snap test, but now they have a machine that does it for them. I would also check that they don't charge you extra for a letter confirming the results. Mine don't but I know someone who's vet charged her an extra £10 for the privilege. The next time she went to that stud, the stud owner phoned the vet to confirm the results to save her having to pay the extra.

I pay £35 for a pre stud blood test and written confirmation of the results.

Re: Snap Test

Thanks. I know my Vets do as one of my cats had to have one done before as part of tests. It was done on the leg and wasn't shaved.
