Exclamation Feeling worried.. *advice please*

I've no experience of having a cat with kittens before. I have just taken on a mamma cat and her 4 8 day old babies been trying to watch her as much as I can without distracting her. I have seen three of them feeding off her but one of the kittens I havn't seen feed off her yet. Should I be worried? This kitten is snuggled up with every one else. Mamma cat doesn't lye there with them for very long. They are about 8-11 days old. I just don't want any of them to go down hill.

Re: Feeling worried.. *advice please*

Some cats only stay with their babies whilst they feed and others are glued to their kitts- so don't worry too much on that score.
Have you managed to weigh the babies?- it's the best way of working out if they're feeding or not.
Generally if a baby is unwell or failing to thrive Mum will shove it off to one side - so the fact that your little one is in the heap sounds quite positive.

the best thing you can do is to weigh the babies regularly, in grams as the numbers are bigger and it's easier to spot trends. Kittens should gain 10-15 g per day on average. If there is no gain, or a loss, over a period of several days then you need to intervene, by supplementary feeding.

Thats a good idea. I'm going to weigh them daily and keep a record of it and also of who I am noticing feeding off her.

I'm a bit worried shes preggy again. The woman she came from said there was a chance. I just really hope she isn't!! (Maybe I should mention my worry to the vets when I'm there with Tiramisu this afternoon getting her wormed)...

Re: Feeling worried.. *advice please*

It's very unlikely she is preganant again already - the earliest I've known of a cat coming back into call whilst feeding was when the kittens were 3 weeks old. But . . it's not impossible. Cats can still 'look' a little preggers at this stage, the mamory glands are swollen and it makes them look fatter and they may still have some fat reserves left for feeding the babies with.

Good luck

Re: Feeling worried.. *advice please*

Thought I'd just post a quick update. Serafina (mamma cat) really is amazing, I decided to sleep in my bed last night (mamma and babys are in the bedroom). I woek up this morning and there she was laying in the bed with Amadeus (the stripey kitten) suckling away. The ginger one (Gatsby) is really doing well. He often pushes the others out of the way and feeds for the longest. Ahaha thats why I called him Gatsby, Gatsby the great (he's going to be big i think) The sisters (Tosca and Cleopatra) are doing very well too.

Also Leviticus, Nefertiti and Tiramisu are leaving mamma cat to it and mamma cat isn't wandering off and leaving her babys for long. I just can't wait till they are running around playing !! Tho it will come soon enough!!
