Re: Stud Advertising

For the right boy, it is always worthwhile travelling to be honest. Sometimes a long journey can knock the queen off call but more often than not, after a day or two of being penned next to the stud boy (who normally sprays for England, well ours does anyway lol) then the queen will come back into call.

Narrow it down a bit............have a think about what faults your girls have, what good points you will need in the stud to overcome those faults, once you have that, then look at things like colours i.e. what you ultimately want to specialise in etc. and once you've got that, you then can start to trawl around to find the boys that fit your needs. And always have more than one boy in mind because remember when your queen comes into call, the boy you choose might be busy at the time with another queen.

Re: Stud Advertising

As I said it's never easy sometimes to find the right boy, but it's worth putting it in a lot of time and effort months before you need one. I actually started looking for a boy for one of our queens when she was just 3 months old. I was looking for something very specific and hard to come by and after a few months and lots of internet searching I found what I was looking for. With a backup boy in mind as well.

The majority of stud owners will never mind if you make inquiries while your girl is still young, even if she is 6 months away from having her first honeymoon.

Re: Stud Advertising

Very wise move. And it also gives that bit extra time to get to know the stud owners via email/phone as well which is always nice. When I was making inquiries, some of the stud owners told me I was welcome to visit them prior to deciding to use their boy so that I could meet the stud for myself etc. which is really great

Smile Re: Stud Advertising

Just wondered if the breeder you got your queen from didn't line up a future stud for you to use - or be prepared to act as a mentor? I haven't sold a breeding cat yet (I would think long and hard before I did) but if I sold a potential queen I would, at least, try to line up one, if not two, potential studs for the new owners. If they didn't choose to use them then that's fine but at least I would have tried to help them along. It can be very hard to get into stud sometimes.

You have had some very sound advice here - do go to shows if you can and get talking to the breeders there. Do your research and ask them to check that pedigrees are compatible.

Good luck

Re: Stud Advertising

When I got my girl I asked her Breeder about the Stud I am looking to use. She spoke with the stud owner at a show, as did I on the phone and everything was sorted that way. I already knew what boy I wanted to use well there is more than one I could use all owned by the same breeder, all very special. It's a 3hr trip too but that's not too bad.

As a novice both my girl's breeder and the stud owner have made sure their pedigrees are compatible and they are and go together quite nicely so I am happy with this situtaion.

Most importantly I have been reasured by my girl's breeder than the stud owner will indeed taken very good care of my girl. I have also been invited around to the stud owners house to view her boys, girls and kittens. We are going when we go to that area as we have relatives there. I have also seen some of the boys off spring on the show bench of whom I like their look and type. This is how I came to choose the stud boys.

I would maybe ask your girl's breeders who they think you should take your girls too.

Re: Stud Advertising

It is great when your breeder is also your mentor and makes a huge difference He/she is bound to have some good ideas where future "husbands" are concerned and they'll also know which studs to stay away from with regards to pedigrees not mixing well etc.
