Weaning kittens

I know they are too young at moment, but want to be prepared when time comes. Ive been told about 4 weeks is this right?

and what do we need to do????? They are going to be weaned on to kitten wet and dry food, so new owners can choose for themselves.

Re: Weaning kittens

If you feed mum near the kittens on a shallow dish, you will soon see them wandering over for a look and a sniff, and maybe a lick.

Last week when I was away, my kitten-carer Patrick gave Cuba some chopped raw lambs heart and told me several of the kittens were very interested, licking it, at 3 weeks old.

Mine are 26 days today and some of them have been eating raw beef mince, soaked dry food (mush it up with your fingers to a paste) and raw chicken mince.... a couple of them with great enthusiasm.

Once they are all eating well I will introduce small amounts of other foods, such as canned or pouched, cooked chicken & fish. I doubt they will try dry kitten food on its own just yet as their teeth are only just through.

Sometimes they will lick food from your fingers but beware, if they like it they often try to chomp on your finger too!

You can also try offering food to them on a small plastic teaspoon but the best way is let them figure it out themselves. You can also very very gently smudge a tiny bit of food from your finger into their mouths but be careful not to scare them or it will set them back.

Re: Weaning kittens

My 5 were just inquisitive and tried the adults food. This was at around 5 weeks old. The rest is history.
They thoroughly enjoyed solids. They also loved chicken, mince, fish etc, so they were spoilt. The 4 boys have gone to other homes where they are still being spoilt!!

Re: Weaning kittens

Your fur babies will copy mum and try her food when they are ready. The wet food will attract them more but baby cat biscuits will munched too. Cats are so clever!

Re: Weaning kittens

Ive got the James Wellbeloved and Pets at Home dry kitten food will that be ok for them? Obviously will mash it first, and whiskas kitten, just because I couldnt get mum to have hi life kitten food with the higher meat content, and I wasnt sure that the new owners would be prepared to pay for the hi life kitten food either.
