5 Day's Old and Kitten Not Feeding

I have a kitten which was born last Friday with 3 others but is not feeding and is starting to be very floppy. He is half the weight of the other 3. I rang the vet and he said to try and feed him with a bottle which i have done but the kitten has no interest at all - i have tried to get him to suckle with no luck. Mummy is really good but the kitten is having none of it. I have tried for hours now but he is still very noisy and not eating. I would appreciate any advice because i'm worried and the vet has indicated that some kittens will just die but what would an experienced breeder do???

I can't give you much advice as I wouldn't say that I'm experienced but it doesn't look good.

We recently lost one that was feeding for 4 weeks and then stopped so I know what you're going through.

I hope things work out for your little one.

Re: 5 Day's Old and Kitten Not Feeding

I am by all means no experienced breeder but this happened with my friends kittens as the mother had Mastitus (excuse the spellling) We would wrap them in a towel so they couldnt move and feed them kitten milk through a dropper (which we got from the chemist).
We found it helped a bit if you held them like a baby aswell - seemed to go down a bit easier!
Good luck! Hope your lil babe is ok.

Feline a/d you can get from your vet's in a tin and a syringe to inject into the kitten's mouth. It's force feeding but can get the kitten going again

Re: 5 Day's Old and Kitten Not Feeding

That sounds like a cleft palette to me.
Open his/her mouth and see whether everything appears normal.

Prognosis is extremely poor for poor kitties with cleft palettes. Sadly we lost two, from two different mums and two different dads within two days because of just such a deformity.

If the palette is deformed the best thing you can do for that little kitty is to take him/her in to be put to sleep.

And yes, I know this is harsh - in humans its a relatively minor deformity. In kittens...

Re: 5 Day's Old and Kitten Not Feeding

If there is a visible split in the roof of the mouth or the soft palate.
If it is bad then it will look a bit like in the photo , also if the kitten dose try to feed , then sometime's you will see milk coming from there nose.
If i was you then i would not try feeding the kitten A/D at only five days old , some breeder's may and maybe it can help , but i would just keep trying milk
If the kitten dose have this bad , then the best thing for the kitten would be to be put to sleep , sorry
