My theory so far (not that there's any way of proving it!) is that the Romans brought over cats other than tabby, but why they would select those is another matter. Or perhaps one needs to knwo what the propoirtion of tabby cats is in Italy?

This is fun - or perhaps I'm just a sad old git?

I'm not sure how to go basic enough for you Kelly, sorry - but you can ask me questions by all means and I'll try to answer.

Well i personally don't need to know-my oh has that side of things pretty much coveredBut there are a lot of newbie breeders and the like who would be glad of any info on this side of things-coz if they don't know the basic colors/genes etc and how you get what with what-how is anyone supposed to understand what your posting in the first place-which you can see is apparent(not everyone) so if you started with the basics ie-dominant colors-what they are, dilute colors etc then other people could learn stuff and be better equipped-but thanks Liz-if i do-i will-coz you seem to know your stuff or your great at copying and pastingLol-but i think you'd be ideal for educating any of us who don't have smartasspartners like your goodself or my oh and it's a matter you clearly like to share with others,if they get the basics, they will be able to ask and understand relevant questions and answers Hope you do-would be a great topic and think we'd all gain

Re: genetics condundrum

Kelly, my post was meant to have a when it talked about making it basic enough for you, I put the in the wrong place so sorry if it looked rude, it wasn't intended to!

Thing is, I can't work out how to do punnet squares on here, it would have to be done as a graphic and added as an image.

Liz-it's fine, knew what you mean't and knew you weren't being rudeBut thanks for taking the time to tell me anywaysBut still think you'd be great for teaching us this stuff-as me personally have managed to grasp a little about it(only coz i do have clever oh and a great book-Genetics for Cat Breeders & Veterinarians-fourth edition by Robinson's.I read and re-read and re-read and some of it i think i understand and some of it i go back and refer to,then i put the book away for a long time coz i get too frustrated If you don't have this already-get it-think you'd really enjoy it and you could get your teeth into itHowever i also know that unless someone has a little knowledge-it's difficult explaining everything else-so wouldn't blame you,my oh just gives me a "look" like-omg-which sentence did i lose you onI do find it as you do-fascinating,just very complex and my brain gets overwhelmed with too much complexityThen again-for me-it really doesn't take a lot:

Re: genetics condundrum

I had that book once (got ruined along with many others when I lived in a house with extreme damp problems). It's very very good.

3. silver (like the whiskas cat, but doesn't have to be tabby)
4. chocolate (ie. dark brown with pinkish paw pads)

Just wondering why these colours / patterns are so under-represented in the moggy population and working on a theory.

Hi Liz, just to answer your question. My moggy had 4 kittens a few weeks ago and one of them has turned out silver like the whiskas cat.

Your thesis sounds very interesting, I'll have to re-read it when I've got my concentration cap on
