Price Negotiation???

Hi All

When someone enquires about a litter of kittens you have and then they ask about the price, do they try and negotiate with you? If so what happens - do you stick to your guns or not? Or do you only budge on price if they are buying more than one kitten?
And in that case what is deemed "fair"??

Just trying to prepare myself for it incase I comes up against it when i sell my kittens

Re: Price Negotiation???

I'd only negotiate if they were having two kittens.

Re: Price Negotiation???

I've never had anyone haggle with price. Most people do research before they start looking and know roughly what they are going to have to pay for a kitten. I have to say if I did get someone that was more interested in the price they were paying for the kitten than the kitten itself then they wouldn't be considered as a future home. I know people have to ask the price, but I am put off if that's the first question they ask.

I haven't ever discounted when people have had more than one kitten, but then I have never had anyone ask either. At the end of the day, the cost of the kitten has very little, if any, profit in it. Certainly siamese and orientals, the price you charge for them just covers the cost of bringing them up. You are lucky if you break even. Some litters you may make a small profit, but the next litter could see you make a huge loss. But you get pleasure by the bucket load

I do offer a small discount to anyone who wants to take two kittens or if I have someone coming back again for another kitten from me I will make a small discount on that.

Re: Price Negotiation???

It puts me off if the first and only question is about price. I never negotiate on price - what I ask for is a bit less than it costs me to bring the kittens into the world and raise them until they are ready for their new homes. If they want to haggle I suggest they go and barter elsewhere. I have never made any reductions on kittens whether one, two or three are bought at the same time.

Re: Price Negotiation???

I've asked Breeder's the price, to make sure I've got enough money!

I usually tell them all about me first and if they like me then I ask the price as I would need to know!!!

I've 3 cats from one breeder, and the 3rd had £50 knocked off. I didn't ask the breeder just did this.

Re: Price Negotiation???

Yes of course people need to know - I am prepared to tell a genuine enquirer the price - its not a secret. Its a very serious investment and not a small one either. I like it when people tell me about themselves too, this helps to encourage me to invite them round to see the kittens. Then people can ask even more questions and see where the kittens are raised etc. I do see it from the buyer's point of view too as I have been and possibly will be there again.

No one has ever bought three kittens in one go from me but I have had a few buying them in twos. Nice to have them go together - it helps them settle in when they have someone to play with.

Re: Price Negotiation???

I've bought 5 Bengals between Dec - April, it never occured to me to try and barter on the price.

Perhaps when I'm breeding I will offer a discount to those who buy two or more at the same time, as it does help the kittens settle in easier.
