caring for kittens mum has no milk

hiya

I have a british blue female who was due on tuesday she did give birth to a kitten on tuesday night but it was deas I was pretty sure that there was another baby inside but she did not give birth again until wednesday night when she had another dead kitten. She seemed fine after each birth and just went back to her usual happy self. I thought it was all over until last night she gave birth to 2 more. Im pretty sure that she didnt understand what to do and I had to help clean and dry the first ktten who was very weak to start with but started to get slightly stronger after an hour or so mum had another baby in the litter tray who is a strong as an ox - he came out fighting and is a lovely healthy looking baby. I stayed up all night with her and kittens at first she didnt want to know but i managed to get her interested and she has started laying with them and letting them cuddle upto her etc. This morning she gave birth to another baby who is also quite a strong little thing.
she does not seem to have any milk so have been giving babies cimicat every 2 hours - the weaker one died about 2 hours ago - I thought she might as she wasnt really wanting to take the milk. But the other 2 are still going very strong and have been drinking loads and at the moment seem very content and are sleeping. I have tried everywhere today to try and get some colostrum for them as I know its very important. Also babies have been going to toilet when i have been rubbing them with cotton wool.

Sorry for the long post but just wanted to know whether you think i should be doing anything else to increase their chances of survival.
they are so strong and I would be gutted if I lost them all

Thanks

Re: caring for kittens mum has no milk

She did show signs of labour but over very quickly each time she would start purring then 1 or 2 contractions - the baby would come out then back to normal. It has all been very strange. I have booked her an appointment with the vet but she seems fine in herself and is in with her kittens purring away

Re: caring for kittens mum has no milk

Are they suckling? Milk isn't very obvious at first, they produce more of it as the kittens get bigger and need more. Is Mum cleaning them and generally looking after them? if so you ought to be in with a fair chance of success if the kittens are healthy.

I've never heard of a birth taking so long with so little effort, that is odd!

Liz

Re: caring for kittens mum has no milk

Hi

Mum seems to be taking some interest and lays with them in the bed and she is loving them cuddling up to her and she is purring etc - I think as it is her first litter she is just abit confused bless her. She really doesnt seem to have any milk the kittens do try to suckle from her but are still seeming hungry. Sometimes mum gives them a little clean when I have fed them. They do seem very healthy so fingers crossed they will be ok.

I know ive never heard of the mum giving birth like this before it was very wierd - but she didnt seem at all distressed in between each kitten and each birth was really easy for her it was just the fact that it was spread out over so many days

That is good they are suckling. It's the colostrum in the first few days the kittens need to keep them strong and healthy.

Should you have any further problems with the kittens there was thread on here last week where mums kittens had sadly died. The lady then started a thread to help any kittens who needed milk.

I hope it all works out well for you.
