Red face Some advice please (be nice!)

Ok, so Mojo had her four kittens one month ago yesterday. This is my first litter and my first female cat. Up til now I have kept the kittens in a very large box which I recently added an extension to as the kits are quite big and were being crazy hooligans and jumping out They are stumbling around, walking is getting much better, should I keep them out of a box now? They are still tiny and we have a lot of people traffic in our small bungalow (which is very open plan) and I am worried about them being stepped on or getting lost/stuck somewhere. But I want them to be able to explore... where do you guys keep your kits before they are weened? Also they are getting their teeth now, when should I try them on kitten food? And should I just put a small dish of it in their box? Are kittens likely to bite wires and other electrical things? Sorry to waffle on and I know this is probably really basic stuff but I just want to be a good slave to them And I will post pics of them as soon as my computer stops being stupid! Would also like to add how fantastic the advice on here has been throughout the pregnancy and birth of my new family thank you all

Re: Some advice please (be nice!)

We used to keep ours in one of the upstairs bedrooms so not much help I guess. We've now had some large maternity suites\nurseries built

Re: Some advice please (be nice!)

I would say its time to learn the kitten shuffle!

If you can get a bigish bed for them to sleep in great - but its probably time they joined in with family. I bring my kittens downstairs out of the maternity suite sometime between 4-6weeks old. If they are mobile enough to be jumping out of the box its time they joined in , try and keep them confined to one room if you can, and place a couple of litter trays in there so mum can start to teach them. I start weaning at 4 weeks too so it wont be long before mum stops cleaning up after them!

You just need to learn to shuffle and double check every time you open a cupboard, close a door etc!

Re: Some advice please (be nice!)

They are in the sitting room at the moment in their giant box, but there is no door in here!!!! Nor is there one in the kitchen, perhaps I will have to let them roam free in my bedroom, it has the least furniture/electricals and I can always put a dust sheet on my bed. I tried them with a small amount of kitten food today and they all had a lick, then they just chewed the bowl!!! Thanks for the advice, I think you are right, they need a room of their own! xxxx

Re: Some advice please (be nice!)

I have just bought a puppy play pen from pets at home which I intend to use for the kittens once they are mobile it has a little door on it, it is very nice that way you can have them in your front room but shut them away if you are popping out. It is called the Smart Top Lounge and cost £30. I hope this helps

Try them on solids at 4-5 weeks mash up kitten food and rub it on their mouths & paws leave bowls of water out.

Make sure if you have alot of visitors that all shows are left at the door & Anti'b used on hands not to bring infection to lil kits!

Re: Some advice please (be nice!)

Mine lived in the living room behind the couch both times! Lol. As for food they got their own once one of them ventured off to try and eat Mum's food. Had no wire chewing though

Re: Some advice please (be nice!)

Thanks for all the advice! I had thought of a puppy pen, just need to find one! Maybe internet is the way to go for a good cheap one...

As for shoes and stuff, I live in Sweden and its the biggest faux pas to wear shoes in any house so thats not a problem, but an anti-bac hand cleanser is a very good idea since we have friends bringing children round.

So, Mojo is still eating dry kitten food (I guess I will stop this when the kits are weened) but I need to start the kits on wet food really dont I?

Sorry to be so clueless about this stuff, I think I need reassurance that I am thinking the right thing, I am so scared of doing something wrong! Also, Mojo is meowing loads, she kept me up from 3 onwards this morning I think maybe she is on heat? What should I be doing about that? She will be spayed as soon as possible (when the kittens are weened?) but til then, should I keep her inside? As cute as they are I dont want anymore kittens! Wow, sorry another essay!

Re: Some advice please (be nice!)

sounds like she is calling........whatever you do dont let her out until about 6 weeks after spaying.........unless you want more kits on your hands!

Ooo I wish it was like that over here with shoes, people actually ask me Why they have to take their shoes of in my house! Even the plumber said 'I do mind taking them off actually' !!! In MY house!! Bloody cheek! How rude!! Shoes are dirty leave them at the door!

Anyway! Yes start the kits of the wet food from 4-5 weeks they may take to it right away or take longer........... I wouldnt keep themin the pen 24/7 they will climb out of it from about 6 weeks anyway!!!

Re: Some advice please (be nice!)

Awww! I had the little hooligans out for about three hours this morning! They are so sweet, I want to keep them all but Im not allowed I think that when I am around I will have them out of their box, but as soon as I go out I will pop them back in. They are playing so much now, even Mojo is playing with them lots! Now, what injections are kits supposed to have and why? Is it absolutely necessary for farm cats?

Oh, and despite shoes coming off upon entry, I still have to hoover every other day!

Oh and ANOTHER question, when do kittens start to purr?

x
