Metacam?

Any one had any problems with Metacam?
Its a painkiller, wich IS licensed in this country for cats; in US (I've been told) apparently it used only for dogs.....
It seems simetimes to cause renal failure or incontinence in cats?
I've got a cat - which needs a painkiller at the moment and been prescribed Metacam.
I asked a Vet to change it to any other painkiller.
The answer was:
1 - " cats have sencitive kidneys anyway....." (!?!?!?love that one)
2 - "this painkiller licensed in this Country"
3 - "the only other one we have - needs to be injected therefore cat have to be hospitalised"....

Any thought? ideas? advise?

Thank you.

Re: Metacam?

Firstly - get a different vet! He/she sounds like a right moron!
Ive been prescribed metacam for my dogs and I didnt actually know it could be used for cats. I didnt have any problems with it.
I thought it was a kind of antibiotic though?!
I dont believe theres only one other kind of painkiller for cats either.
Search on a pet pharmacy for painkillers and ask the vet to write you a prescription. They have to do this by law so you'l be able to get the painkiller they dont have online yourself.

Re: Metacam?

Hi Anele, we haven't used it so i can't say,but i'd be very cautious to take anything from a vet who can't be bothered to explain to you what he's asking you to give your cat and reassure you on any queries you have-will ask about and see whats what
