Re: help from colour genetic experts!!!

If his mum is snow then he has to carry it- if a parent is a recessive colour then all that parent's offspring carry that colour. This is the only certainty about carried colours

So you have no need to test him, save yourself some money

BTW i presume you know that "snow" is either siamese or burmese gene?

This is complicated at least until the penny drops I guess.

I may know this soon anyway as he's got another of our snow girls pregnant but can you get the tests done at your vets? How much do they cost?

Re: help from colour genetic experts!!!

Actually, genetics are the same for all breeds - the genes don't know which breed they are in
Bengals are no different, except in terminology.

You can't get the tests done at the vets as far as I am aware - most people I know have had it done in the US (very easy) and it costs $40-50 per test. try UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory.

Yes but it doesn't get any easier does it!

Now from looking around the web I'm now wondering whether some of my silver girls kittens are actually blue?

yes - except that birmans don't do shaded, or smoke, or snow, or silver etc so I have no idea if that is resessive or not cos it's not part of my breed. I know I should but not being what I need to know it just won't stick! I am indeed thick!

So by definition I must be really thick because I can't even get a grip on the Bengal breed!

Snow is recessive, silver isn't. Smoke, I have no idea?

I think Bengals might have more to deal with than Birmans - so NO you can't join the thick club!

At the Albino locus.
cs (Siamese)
cb (Burmese)
Brown spotted = CC, Ccs or Ccb
Blue eyed snow = cscs
AOC snow aqua eyes (Mink)=cscb
AOC Snow green/gold eyes (Sepia) = cbcb

If your brown spotted stud's mother was a blue eyed snow then he will be Ccs if she was a Mink he could be Ccs or Ccb or if his mother was Sepia he will be Ccb.

If his mother was snow he will definitely carry for snow, cs or cb.

Silvers are II or Ii
A melanistic (solid) is aa
A Smoke is therefore II aa or Ii aa.

Re: help from colour genetic experts!!!

Of course you're not, everyone has to learn in the beginning. I have to be grateful that I've bred Asians for a long time, they come in most of the possible colours and patterns, and the others I've just picked up as I've gone along through reading, because I just find it all so interesting
