Newbie Here

Hi I just found this site last night its really imformative My 11 month old cat Sammy is Pregnant and has a couple of weeks left I think, Does anyone have any tips about what I need to do when she starts giving birth I was told that cats usually dont need any help even. I have made up a birthing box for her. I was also wondering about about weaning I think you need to do it from 3 weeks but I dont have a clue how to do it as I do I need to get another litter tray? I have never had a pregnant cat before so dont really have a clue any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Richard

Re: Newbie Here

Hi and welcome RichardHave you any idea how pregnant she is? Queens do normally do most if not all the work themselves but as with any delivering mum support from a trusted midwife is important,To be honest i wouldn't worry just yet about weaning, let her give birth and keep us updated and we'll take it from their, you and she will be fine as everyone will have lots of great advice and tips as and when you need them-do you have any pics of your lady in waiting?

Re: Newbie Here

Hi,
Good start with the birthing box, best put in a quiet warm place like next to a radiator, and with a cover inside especially how cold it is now. Kittens need to be kept warm. No need to worry about litter trays and weaning before kittens are 3 to 4 weeks old. But mum will need abit extra food now and after kittens are born.

When you type a reply you will see a yellow button along the top of the box you are typing in. If you hover over that it should say 'insert image'. Click that and it will give you a box where you insert the URL of your image - only any good if your picture is on the internet.

Some queens can do the work just fine - others need a helping hand - which you see more commonly with certain pedigree breeds (like the Bengal!). I would be with her if at all possible.

In the 24 hours leading up to the birth you will find that she will start to look for somewhere dark, warm and private. This will be different from the nesting behaviour she would have displayed in the last couple of weeks of pregnancy. The birthing box may not be what she wants to use so a little gentle persuasion may be needed. My last queen gave birth in her own bed but had to have a blanket over her to make her feel secure enough to give birth, even in a darkened room!

Make sure the birthing box is somewhere quiet and tucked away in a corner. You'll probably find she'll want to give birth somewhere you least expect or want it! As long as the area is easily reachable, and clean I don't see a problem with it.

Re: Newbie Here

That's because you are trying to link to the picture on your computer, rather than the internet.

Ahhhhh. Try this!

Above that little yellow image icon you found earlier you will find a picture of a paperclip.
When you click that it will give you a box that says 'upload file from computer'.
Use the browse button to navigate to the picture you want, then click upload.

We'll see Sammy before you know it!
