Re: current climate and cat breeding!

sorry i forgot to check up on this thread.
Brilliant feedback, i honestly thought cat breeding was a business I never thought you made loss's

thanks for letting me know

I will say that our CPL have had one of the most sucessful years for rehoming, but also ALOT of abandoment. I also agreed the sucess was down to morale and a family pet can keep a family happy for years to come at a relativley small price.

Re: current climate and cat breeding!

I dont think the credit crunch will affect the reputable and responsible breeders who breed quality kittens to keep to show for themselves.

I have a full waiting list of people who contacted me because I was recommended to them and most of them have never even asked about the price. Some of them have been in contact since last year as I choose to only breed one or two litters a year and with the average litter of only 2/3 kittens they have been told that they could be in for a long wait.

Has anyone found the current 'credit crunch' or 'recession' has affected thier breeding business?

Anyone been forced to lower kitten prices to sell them?

Excuse my ignorance, i'm not sure how breeding works.... do you have a waiting list for kittens and then breed based on that or to you have kittens first then advertise for owners?

I suppose that would depend on the breed (some are i imagine are in higher demand than others) but have noticed quite alot of pedigree ads in local papers ect recently

Just interested!
hi no i have not had a problem selling my cats and i have not had to lower price at all.

I think this cat breeding "business" whether moggie or pedigree will find the next while "challenging". Whether we can sell litters in the next few months is neither here nor there, it is the long term view, I am trying to outline.

This is the philosophy that I think will outlive this particular storm.

I don't think many good breeders would wish to sell a cat to someone who doesn't meet "rescue" requirements. Most breeders screen their potential owners just as carefully.

I had no problem purchasing a cat of a reputable breeder but had great difficulty getting a cat form the RSPCA as i 1.. already have cats, 2.. have 2 youngish children (both at primary school) and 3, i live in rented accomodation. a great deal of cats in rescue centres can not be rehomed with other animals or children

I was turned down by about 6 rescues as I didnt have a garden at the time & they said to me that they put the kittens outside at 8 weeks and will only re-home to people with gardens!

Crazy the amount of loving good homes with people with no gardens yet they say no? Crazy!!
