Mum turns on kittens.....

The little feral girl, Minx, who is at my friends house came back into call about 10 days ago and while she tolerated her kittens she wasn't being a proper mum. But since she came of call she has really turned on them, been quite nasty to them so everyone decided it was in their best interests to be removed from her. I couldn't see the little babes go into shelter so they came to mine!! They are due to go to their new homes at 9 weeks so i thought this was the best idea. As they can get used to an average household! Although they are in my room and i am gradually introducing them to the others cats/dog/daughter lol!! My pets are ok with it all, considering they aren't coming into my room at night anymore, well not yet!!

They are 5 weeks on Sunday, they are eating kitten food and drinking water we also give them a small amount of supplement milk. They are using the litter tray and are generally great kittens. They did have to treated with anti-biotics when they were 2 1/2 weeks due to mum having cat flu when she was pregnant but now they are picture's of health, huge happy kitties!

Minx has turned nasty again and i am really upset about that as i honestly thought i was making good progress. All beacause of this call

Why would a mum do this?? And am i doing things right? Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Mum turns on kittens.....

Hiya it all sounds pretty good so far as they are eating & drinking alone so just lots of playing, socializing, used to noise etc etc for you lol!

Poor mum, they will probably be carries of the virus now so keep them away from your cats just incase (is that right-anyone?)

Re: Mum turns on kittens.....

Depends what virus and how much immunity they had to it x

I would keep them away from any other cats though to be safe, if it's herpes it wouldn't be good to let cats anywhere near them and a disinfecting regime should be looked at x

mums can turn on kittens for various reasons, usually it is due to illness but can be hormones also and a variety of other factors, like her maybe wanting to raise kittens on her own and not liking a human's involvement x

Re: Mum turns on kittens.....

Thanks for you replies guys. I will keep them away from all my cats until they go tp their new homes and cleanse the room before mine go back in. Just to be safe. I have also explained to the new owners about it all and the two that are taking them on now do have experience but do not have current cats.

Minx is going to the shelter i will miss her. But they have the experience and time to deal with her, and either make her re-homeable or keep her as a resident i hope.
