Preparing

Helloo again!
I was hoping i could get some help on what i need for preparing myself and my cat for birth. Where is the best place for my cat to nest-should i set up a place or leave it to her(she may use somewhere outside) I've been looking up what the equipment is and i've come up with apron, iodine, blankets, scissors, gloves, ear syringe, guaze, thread anything more....? What are the procedures for helping my cat through birth? Even though i'm proberly still 5 weeks off kittens i still think it would be great to be prepared! At what age are kittens allowed outside and at what age would it be safe to let kittens explore and climb on a cat tree?
I know this is alot of questions but i'd really appretiate if they were answered!x

Re: Preparing

There's a sticky at the topp of this page that probably answers all these questions. Have a look see as I'm not too sure.

Keep her in, definitely. Set up a large cardboard box on its side with the opening pointing forwards, put in a comfy bedding of towels and sheets. When they are actually in labour I put layers of pampers changing mats on the top, and remove the top one as it becomes soiled. Put a blanket over the box, with just enough open so she can get in and out. It needs to be somewhere quiet and draft free. Put a litter tray in the room, but as far away from the box as possible. When she has them change the soiled bedding and put in warm blankets. You can use a heat pad underneath, but I have found that makes mine too warm if they are completely enclosed and draft free, just a replenished hot water bottle covered in a fleece blanket placed near the door way to keep out drafts works fine.

Mum will probably do everything herself, but I think the basic necessities are ample supply of flannels (tescos value, can be boiled afterwards) for drying and rubbing kittens if need be, kitchen roll, nappy sacks for waste, iodine, scissors - but if you are going to cut the cord because Mum hasn't then you need to crush the cord between your finger nails first, and sterilise the scissors before you use them (I dip the scissors in iodine before I use them to cut the cords), vets number and phone for emergencies, hot water bottle or heat pad for keeping babies who are already born warm whilst Mum has the rest, replacement milk Cimicat or RC something like that and a feeding syringe/bottle like the Mikki Mothering Kit, digi scales for weighing babies at birth and on a daily basis, cushion to sit on its hard on your bum sitting for hours on the floor, stiff drink for afterwards.

Buy a book called Every Cat. Its no longer in print, but you can get copies from Amazon or ebay. That has loads of good info with cartoons on the birth process and what to do.

Kittens should be kept in until they have been spayed or neutered at 6 mths old. Whilst they are still little and have had their jabs then a bit of supervised sun bathing on the patio is fine, but not to be left outside by themselves.

Kittens will discover the cat post as they grow start to run around and explore, they know what they can manage and what they can't.

Re: Preparing

at the very top of the page where the threads start (click on 'cat breeding' ) - I think it is the very first thread. It's called a sticky cos it's stuck where it is - it can't move even if no-one posts on it - then it can't get lost. If you look to the immdiate left of the title you should see that it says sticky.
