Help Needed Urgently!

Our cat Daisie is in labour and has given birth to kitty number one. She has eaten through the cord and eaten the placenta. How does the cord close though? There seems to be a little blood around it, should we be concerned or will it just close on its own.

I read that you can tie it with dental floss if you have to snip it yourself (ie if the queen doesn't)

Re: Help Needed Urgently!

Panic over! She went back and tidied it up a bit and it all seems good now. Kitty number 2 has just arrived and she's doing a great job with that one aswell.

When should Daisie allow the kittens on to her teats?

Mine just let her kitty as they was born to start looking for a nip! And all was fine, Also mine had 2 one after another and she took the sack off licked for around 3/4 mins then left it while she birthed the next....But then she cleaned off both........! Awwww more kitties!

I'll try and help from my experince, lol but not that much of a help!

Re: Help Needed Urgently!

It depends on the mum, do you think she has more to come?

Some cats in the middle of birthing dont really pay attention to the born kittens (apart from the basics) until they have all arrived. If thats the case, move them into a warm box out of the way while she gets on with the business at hand.

Others like to settle down and nurse for a few minutes between each kitten. hth xx

Re: Help Needed Urgently!

when my cat gave birth last may, as soon as she had cleaned them, they went straight to the teats. but as soon as she started to deliver the next ones the existing kitts seemed to be getting in the way. i didn't have a spare box ready (didn't really know what to expect) so i just put them in the corner of the birthing box and barred their way back to mum until the new kitt was cleaned up and settled down. mummy cat seemed to really appreciate this bit of help, and she could still see them and so wasn't worried or stressed out. if somebody had taken my son out of my sight when i had him 3 years ago, i would have torn the hospital apart looking for him, and so i was kinda thinking in these terms for mummy cat too.

Re: Help Needed Urgently!

I cut the cords myself with my nails right a the top & put iodine spray on the ends to stop infections going up them. they then all fell off naturally. Apart from 2 which mum done herself.

I also helped her eat the placenta due to the hormones in it which produces a feeling of trust & wellbeing & helps the milk flow

Mum didnt want them on her until she had finished giving birth & was safely in her nest I kept them warm while she finished

Re: Help Needed Urgently!

Sometimes cords have a bit of blood in them and they 'leak' abit when chewed/cut, the action of the Mum chewing them is supposed to crush the cord first sealing it a bit before it is severed completely, but it doesn't always work like that.

Every cat is different, one cat will do one thing another the exact opposite. I have Mums that flatly refuse to touch babies or placentas until I do them and present them with a nicely cleaned baby I would take your cue from her. If she wants the kittens to suckle whilst she is in labour then she will encourage them, otherwise she will move away. Once they are finished they are more settled and are more attentive to their babies. Some babies are great at finding teats, others not so and occasionally need a bit of help in getting on them. Once they get the idea though they are away.

Congratulations on your babies.

Re: Help Needed Urgently!

Thanks for your replies. I think Daisie has now finished at 4. All healthy and well touch wood. Labour was no problem, she delt with it like a pro. Just a little yelp when the first one popped out and then nothing.

How can we be sure they have all be delivered. We've felt her tummy and are pretty sure she is empty now.

A couple of pics attached. Don't want to unsettle her by taking more!!!
