bottle feeding the kitten

right I did bottle rear a farm kitten many years ago so do to some extent know what I am doing
think i just managed a successful feed yeah am so please
poor little thing is starving
the vet gave me cimicat powder and have ordered some of the kittystim
it says on the kitten powder to give 3 to 3.5ml per feed but the only measure I have is 5ml so have been doing that in a bottle
its going mad on my hand for the milk that doesn't quite go in its mouth but hates the teat until just now....
and he just guzzled 5ml straight down in like 30 seconds and would have had more
should I stick to the 5ml every two hours or give him less or more?
he was 85g at birth and has gone down to 77g
he is very strong though. a right wriggler and very vocal
I think I may have to take over from mum
what do you think?

Re: bottle feeding the kitten

Ok I don't really have experience with this, but I would say as he has lost a fair bit of weight then yes take over from mum. Although saying that mums milk is best as it contains antibodies, so if it were me I would keep on with the hand feeding but still try to get him on mum. Hopefully with the hand feeding, he will build strength & be able to feed from his mummy!

I hope that kinda gives you some help & please let us know how you get on xx

Re: bottle feeding the kitten

I would do similar - give him as much as he will take. Not sure how old the kitten is - sounds like he's only two days old. Often when a baby is born, it may lose a bit of weight at first because it is having to take food via its mouth rather than straight into its body via the umbilical cord. I would put a bit over 5ml in the bottle and let him take as much as he wants but still try him with his mum's milk. If he finishes the milky easily, then next feed offer him a bit more,or an earlier feed - they will stop when they've had enough for the time being. If he leaves a drop or two its ok - same amount next feed.

Re: bottle feeding the kitten

Great news - looks like his mum wasn't sure what to do. Hope things progress from here.

Re: bottle feeding the kitten

The cimicat tub gives you feeding instructions ie mls and number of feeds depending on age. I think it says 2 - 2.5ml for 1 to 3 days old, so if he is taking 4ml he is doing well. Be careful you don't over feed him though, as too much is as bad as too little.

I would weigh him before you feed him and then weigh him straight afterwards, that way you know some has gone in. Its good he is still sucking from Mum, because hopefully that will encourage her milk to come in. I have heard of a queen taking 10 days for her milk to come in properly.

ok I think I'll stick to 4ml and put him back on mum
he is defiantly getting it
not spilling a drop lol
fed him at 4.30 and put him with mum and he latched on and is still rummaging about now
lol they are in a shoe box next to me on the sofa

the bottle from the vet starts measures at 15ml and the smallest thing I have to measure is 5ml
