In-breeding

Morning everyone,

How much of a problem is in-breeding. Was looking at my new kittens pedigree certificate and it looks like her great grandparents were half brother and sister (had the same father) and also she has the same great-great grandfather on both sides (diff to the above)

I've read and interesting article this morning that states the below so is this likely to cause problems for my kitten?

PROS
Produces uniform or predictable offspring.
Hidden (recessive) genes show up and can be eliminated.
Individuals will "breed true" and are "pure."
Doubles up good genes.
Eliminates unwanted traits.

CONS
Doubles up on faults and weaknesses.
Progressive loss of vigor and immune response.
Increased reproductive failures, fewer offspring.
Emphasis on appearance means accidental loss of "good" genes for other attributes.
Genetically impoverished individuals.

Thanks

Re: In-breeding

Thank goodness. I didn't check the certificate till I got home yesterday and was starting to panic that Lola would have some horrible diseases as a result.

Re: In-breeding

Whilst a many breeders will practise "line breeding" or mate closely related cats to one another, it is something one has to be careful of - if you are a breeder who is considering this, you will probably know the lines you are dealing with back to front and forward again. It is probably wiser not to do it until one is thoroughly knowledgeable about the breeding line.

Probably won't affect your little one.
