Blue Stem Cell is on a distinguished road
Unhappy Do I need to ring a vet?

First Merry X-mas and happy holidays too all....secondly....erm, hmm.

This morning my cat started (what we thought) where the first stages of labour. She was restless, the mucus plug and all that charmingness came away and she was pawing around in the cat bed she was nesting in....

Over 12 hours later...Nothing...Not even a squeak. It's x-mas day so no chance in calling a vet and they're not open tomorow...

Is this normal? This is the first pregnant cat I've ever had...She fast asleep on the sofa on the moment and is quite content.

Thanks in advance....

Re: Do I need to ring a vet?

you can still ring your out of hours emergency vet and request a call back, you can then talk over the phone to a vet.

Re: Do I need to ring a vet?

Hello BlueStemCell - what an interesting name!? How is your little queen now? As SB&S says, you can still phone an emergency vet, but you may have already done this - if so, did you get a satisfactory response?

I have two queens of my own and have been breeding for a relatively short time (about 8 years). In my own experience, the time between the plug coming away (which is what you appear to have described) and the sight of the first kitten, can vary - it could be six hours, two hours, twelve hours or more. The important thing is that the queen should not strain and push hard without sign of a kitten for more than 1.5 or 2 hrs. If your girl is reasonably happy just nesting and scratching but still reasonably content, then relax but still keep an eye on her and the vets number nearby. Most queens cope very well without vet interference, many like to have the comfort of their humans near at hand for reassurance.

Please let us know how you get on. Sending lots of positive thoughts and hope to hear good news about a lovely healthy litter of kittens and happy purring queen soon.
